Dwele deed pas geleden Europa aan voor een mini tour ter promotie van zijn laatste album Wants.World.Women. Dit keer kwam de Detroitse soulzanger niet naar Nederland, maar we spraken hem toen hij optrad in Brussel. We stelden hem een paar vragen over  zijn recente werk, samenwerkingen met andere artiesten en zijn nieuwe album dat in augustus verschijnt!

You released Wants.World.Women in 2010. What have you been up to until now?
A lot of touring, promoting the album and I just recently did a mini album. I was supposed to start selling it in London, but let’s see how it goes here. I’ll probably sell it out here tonight too.

Is it just for promotion or really an album?
It’s like a mini album, a 25 minute album. It has nothing to do with the new project coming out in August. It’s just that I had some time off and I was motivated to do something. I wanted to do something special for Europe.

When I listen to your music I think you understand women really well.
No way! (laughs) I understand that I DON’T understand women!

But you sing to us so well. Through the years you must have learned a lot of stuff about women. Can you tell us about what you learned?
I learned that I’ll never understand them (laughs). As women you will never understand men and as men you will never understand women. I think when I make songs I poor soul and I try to speak to the guy like: this is what women are thinking. I’m trying to help US out.

So it’s like: listen to Dwele’s songs and guys will know what to do when it comes to women?
Yeah, it seems like that (laughs).

It’s hard to pick a favorite Dwele song. I love them all but one that always sticks with me is “Without You”. I know it’s an older song off of your first album “Subject” but  I would love to know how you got to write it.
I was at Jazzy Jeff studio in Philadelphia. It got done on the same day when we were working on the song “Possible”, that actually never came out. Raheem produced that song. I started playing these cords and kind of singing the melody and he was like: let’s record it! And I was like: OK. So we just did it right there. It came together in like two hours.

You do a lot of collaborations which brings something totally new out of you each time, that otherwise simply would not come out. Is there anyone in particular you would like to work with that you think would bring something REALLY special out of you?
There are a lot of people that I would like to work with. I think something different comes out with every new artist that I work with. When I work with Kanye it will cause a different kind of feel, when I work with Common it causes a different kind of feel. I kind of vibe off the energy that the other artist is bringing to the song. If I had to choose somebody that I would like to work with that I haven’t worked with, it will be Erykah Badu. I still haven’t worked with Badu. To be able to work with her would be crazy.

Do you have any collaborations on the new album?
Not yet. It’s still premature, but I’m sure we’ll do something.

In an interview January last, you said you didn’t really know what direction you were going with the new album and that you would know in a couple of weeks. It’s April now, so we were thinking you might be able to tell us a little bit more!
I still don’t know yet (laughs). I’m still just in the process of making songs. What I do is, I make songs and then I take these songs and put them together to see what story they are telling. Then I kind of fill in the pieces from there. I’m still in the creative process right now.

It is coming out in August?
Yes!

You just set that date? Like before August it’s got to be done?
Yeah. I wish I could take longer but my management is making me set a date (laughs).

I also heard you say that you might want to put it your new album out independently. Is that still the plan?
Yes.

Helaas was het mini album alleen verkrijgbaar tijdens zijn live shows. Het is helaas niet in de winkel of online verkrijgbaar. Hopelijk besluit Dwele het mini album als nog te releasen!

Donna Summer wordt beroemd op de dansvloer. Als disco in de jaren ’70 dé muziektrend is, gaan veel zwarte artiesten hierin mee. Maar niemand krijgt de mensen aan het dansen zoals Donna Summer. De enige echte ‘Queen of Disco’ overlijdt op 17 mei 2012 aan de gevolgen van kanker.

Zegt haar naam je niets? Grote kans dat je het refrein van haar hits toch mee kunt zingen. En nog grotere kans dat je wel eens op één van haar nummers gedanst hebt. Het is namelijk onmogelijk om stil te zitten als je “Hot Stuff” of “I Feel Love” hoort.

Dansen en zingen zitten Donna Summer in het bloed, net als stout zijn. Als tiener gaat ze vaak stiekem uit, ondanks de strenge regels van haar ouders. Ze behaalt nooit haar diploma, omdat ze kort voor het eindexamen naar New York vertrekt om in een band te zingen.

Als ze auditie doet voor de musical Hair, krijgt ze de rol. Niet in New York, maar in München. Geheel tegen de wil van haar ouders in, verhuist Summer naar Duitsland. Haar eerste album verschijnt alleen in Nederland. Hoewel ze succes heeft met een mix van folk en rock, wil Summer het nieuwe discogeluid verder ontwikkelen.

In 1975 komt haar internationale doorbraak. Ze zingt een demo zoals Marilyn Monroe het volgens haar zou hebben gedaan. Stiekem schaamt Summer zich voor het stoute gekreun, maar disco liefhebbers krijgen er geen genoeg van. Met 16:50 minuten is “Love To Love You Baby” één van de eerst disco hits die in de originele lengte wordt uitgebracht.

Volgende grote hit “I Feel Love” is een soort futuristisch orgasme. De elektronische stijl wordt gezien als een voorloper op techno. Donna Summer is inmiddels alle schaamte voorbij en wordt dankzij haar pikante liedjes gekroond tot koningin van de disco.

LP Bad Girls uit 1979 doet de titel eer aan: stoute Summer staat als prostituee op de cover. De singles “Hot Stuff” en “Bad Girls” staan wederom garant voor een stomend feestje.

Begin jaren ’80 wil Summer meer dan een disco koningin zijn. Het leidt tot strubbelingen met haar platenmaatschappij en fans. Toch weet ze succesvol te blijven met nummers als “State Of Independence” en “She Works Hard For The Money”. Het zijn inmiddels klassiekers en vormen de blauwdruk voor de dansbare liedjes van bijvoorbeeld Rihanna, die haar stoute imago ook niet van een vreemde heeft.

Summer sterft als haar impact op de dansmuziek zeer voelbaar is. Elektronische muziek is weer ‘hot’. Hits van Rihanna (“We Round Love”), Usher (“Climax”) en Jason Derulo (“Breathing”) zijn een mix van R&B en techno die werd geboren dankzij Donna Summer. Zolang deze te horen is op alle dansvloeren, leeft de koningin van de disco voort.

Polaris is de naam van het nummer en Blu draagt bij met een excellente verse. De productie is heerlijk zweverig, en dan valt die beat: heerlijk. Anthm’s flow en delivery is een perfecte match. And Blu provides the icing on the cake. Aanrader!

Na een lange stilte op het solo-front ziet het er nu eindelijk weer naar uit dat Tab-One met een nieuwe plaat gaat komen. De naam is Madflowridiculous en Sunshine J zal verantwoordelijk zijn voor de producties. De eerste single Sunshinin’ klinkt heerlijk zomers en doe mijn verlangen naar het strand, de BBQ en ‘the good times’.

Als dit een indicatie is van de kwaliteit van het nieuwe album, dan durf ik nu al te zeggen dat Madflowridiculous bij mij hoog op mijn ‘best of 2012′ lijstje zal eindigen.

Ain’t That Peculier is een Marvin Gaye hit van ‘back in the day’ en zou mijn inziens zo weer de hitlijsten in kunnen. Watch, listen, enjoy!

Tevens is dit nummertje de eerste single afkomstig van zijn nieuwe mixtape. De officiële release daarvan vindt plaats op 21 mei. Net als de single zal ook deze mixtape gratis te downloaden zijn.

Met zijn debuutalbum #hoodmusic, uit 2011, wist de jonge zanger zichzelf in de spotlight te spelen bij verschillende partijen. Helaas is daar nog niet veel concreets uitgekomen. Maar als hij zo aan de weg blijft timmeren, dan kan dat niet al te lang meer duren.

Het is al een tijdje geleden dat Blige een ouderwets goed nummer uitbracht. Met “Why” bewijst ze weer dat ze The Queen of Hip Hop Soul is.

In 2003 bracht hij zijn eerste album uit onder zijn eigen opgerichte recordlabel Plug Label. Zonder ervaring, weinig geld en met behulp van zijn vrienden en leuren aan de telefoon distribueerde hij 50 exemplaren wereldwijd. Een exemplaar daarvan eindigde in een minuscule platenzaak in Tokyo, opgepikt door een Japanse DJ die hem in een club draaide. En toen was het aan. Een platenlabel executive vroeg direct om 3000 exemplaren extra en dit was de brandstof om van het album een underground jazz/hip hop klassieker te maken.

Kero One speelt zelf alle instrumenten, rapt en heeft de hele sound engineering gedaan op “Windmills of The Soul”. In 2006 stopt hij bij zijn baan als webdesigner en volgt een full time carrière in de muziek. Collabo’s met o.a. Talib Kweli, Epik High, Fashawn, Far East Movement, Dj Cash Money en DJ Kentaro. Be sunshine, people. You never know who you might touch.

Gary Bartz begon met de alto sax bespelen op elf jarige leeftijd in zijn vaders nachtclub met o.a. Art Blakey en George Benson. Collabo’s met giants als Donald Byrd en Miles Davis en met dit album met Larry & Alphonso “Fonce” Mizell als producers weet je zeker dat het album gladder is dan je pas gewaxte rug. Een van de top level producties van de broertjes Mizell.Fan-tas-tik.
Fonce is het brein achter de essentiële Jackson 5 hits zoals “I want you back”, “ABC” en “The love you save”. Niet alleen muzikaal geniaal, maar Larry was ook elektrische engineer bij NASA. Outer space jazz and funk op dit meesterwerk dus.

“Beastie Boys” rapper MCA — real name Adam Yauch — has died.

In 2009, MCA announced he was being treated for a cancerous parotid gland and a lymph node. He has since undergone surgery and radiation therapy. So far, it’s not clear if the death is related to the rapper’s battle with cancer.

Russell Simmons’ website GlobalGrind.com first reported the death. We have spoken to people independently connected to the rapper who also say he is dead. Yauch co-founded Beastie Boys in 1979 with Mike D, Mix Master Mike, and Ad Roc. The group has won multiple Grammys. Yauch became a vegan at the recommendation of his Tibetan doctors. Yauch is survived by his wife and daughter. He was 47.

Nas lijkt vaarwel te hebben gezegd tegen zijn ‘Ochie Wally’ probeersels. Zijn recente stijl is te omschreven als part-time hustler, full-time truth-spitter. Een verandering die velen, waaronder ikzelf, alleen maar kunnen toejuichen.

In “The Block Party” zagen we ook al de opvallende kleding, pruiken en héle felle kleuren. En net als Nicki Minaj, doet Lopes denken aan een tekenfilmfiguur, met haar grote ogen en jeugdige stemgeluid. Toch is het niet gek dat “Super Bass” niet wordt vergeleken met de “The Block Party”. Lopes is vooral bekend als eenderde van TLC.

Tijdens de jaren ’90 zijn er ontelbaar veel R&B meidengroepjes, maar TLC is veruit de populairste. Niet alleen door hun muziek, maar zeker ook door hun persoonlijkheden. TLC heeft een eigen ‘in house’ rapper, die de liedjes kruidt met een pittige rap. Maar Left Eye is meer dan alleen de rapper.

Een condoom als kledingaccessoire? Idee van Left Eye! De wijde pyjama’s in de “Creep” video? Left Eye! Alle albumtitels? Left Eye! De decors bij de optredens? Left Eye! Het verhaal achter “Waterfalls”? Left Eye! En vooral de boodschap om in jezelf te geloven, komt van Left Eye.

Lisa Lopes wordt op 27 mei 1971 geboren in Philadelphia. Een echt thuis heeft zij niet, want haar vader zit in het leger. Elke keer als Ronald Lopes naar een nieuwe legerbasis moet, verhuizen Lisa en haar broertje en zusje mee. Als oudste gebruikt ze haar fantasie om hen verhalen te vertellen, die het constante verkassen doen vergeten.

Dat Lopes kan entertainen, is vroeg duidelijk. Op haar vijfde leert Lisa zichzelf piano spelen en ze weet dat zij artiest wil worden. Dit leidt tot talloze botsingen met haar alcoholistische vader. Lisa mag meedoen aan talentenjachten, maar op voorwaarde dat ze wint. Als dit niet lukt, kan ze rekenen op een flink pak slaag. Rebels als zij is, loopt Lopes op haar zeventiende weg van huis naar Atlanta.

Tijdens een avondje uit ontmoet Lopes aspirant zangeres Tionne Watkins. Ze besluiten een groep te beginnen. Tijdens een auditie wordt het eigen geluid van de twee dames herkend door Pebbles, op dat moment zelf een beroemde zangeres. Zij voegt Rozonda Thomas bij de groep en zorgt voor een platencontract. Diezelfde dag hoort Lopes dat haar vader is doodgeschoten.

Het klinkt goed tussen de dames en ze noemen zich TLC, dat staat voor Tender Loving Care. Om de groepsnaam meer kracht te geven bedenken ze bijnamen voor zichzelf. Tionne wordt T-Boz en Rozonda heet voortaan Chilli. Lisa doopt zichzelf Left Eye. In een interview legt zij zelf uit: ‘My name is Left Eye, cause I is always right.’

Vooral Left Eye wil met de muziek van TLC iets meegeven aan de luisteraar: wees altijd trots op jezelf. Geen liefdesliedjes dus, maar stoere hip hop op debuutalbum Ooooooohhh … On The TLC Tip. In video’s als “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg” en “Hat 2 Da Back” hebben de dames zichtbaar lol, maar ze promoten ook ‘safe sex’ door condooms in hun jongensachtige kleding te verwerken. Meisjes én jongens kunnen zich met TLC identificeren.

Op CrazySexyCool is een ander geluid te horen. Het tweede TLC album bevat meer zwoele R&B tracks. Ook het imago van de dames is eleganter. In de video bij de eerste single “Creep” draagt het trio geen baggy jeans, maar zijden pyjama’s. “Creep” wordt TLC’s eerst nummer één en doet de albumtitel eer aan, want het is sexy én cool. En het ‘crazy’ element? Daar zorgt Left Eye voor.

Left Eye is maar op vier CrazySexyCool nummers te horen, omdat zij het merendeel van de opnames niet kan bijwonen. Lopes zit in de gevangenis wegens brandstichting. De problematische relatie met haar vader blijft Left Eye achtervolgen en zij valt voor de charmes van Andre Rison. Net als Lopes’ vader heeft Rison losse handjes. En net als haar vader grijpt Lisa regelmatig naar de alcohol.

Als Andre haar tijdens één van hun vele ruzies weer slaat, laat dronken Lopes het er niet bij zitten. Zij steekt Andre’s sportschoenen in brand in de badkamer. Niet alleen de schoenen, maar de hele villa gaat in vlammen op. Lopes wordt gearresteerd. In de gevangenis kickt ze af van de alcohol.

CrazySexyCool is een gigantisch succes. Er gaan alleen al in de Verenigde Staten elf miljoen exemplaren over de toonbank. Dit maakt het op dat moment het best verkochte hip hop album ooit. De grootste hit is “Waterfalls” dat gaat over serieuze zaken als drugshandel en AIDS. Left Eye’s rap komt recht uit haar hart en gaat over haar turbulente leven. “Waterfalls” wordt een wereldhit en is de definitieve doorbraak.

Terwijl TLC de status van supersterren hebben bereikt, moeten zij ook de status van hun financiën onder ogen zien. De groep is failliet. De rebelse Left Eye neemt zich geen blad voor de mond en spreekt zich veelvuldig uit over hun wurgcontract. Een lange, slopende rechtszaak volgt en het voortbestaan van TLC is onzeker.

‘I be’s the one to blame, as the flames keep rising to the top’. Left Eye spot met zichzelf tijdens haar solo uitstapje op “Not Tonight” van Lil’ Kim. Dit is niet haar enige bezigheid. Zo presenteert ze The View op MTV en is de manager van Blaque. Dit R&B-trio scoort hits met “Bring It All To Me” en “I Do”, waarop Left Eye ook meerapt. Een nieuw TLC album laat lang op zich wachten.

Begin 1999 is het zover: TLC’s derde album komt uit. FanMail is een stevig staaltje futuristische R&B en hip hop. Wederom is Left Eye maar op een handjevol tracks te horen en geeft publiekelijk aan niet helemaal achter dit project te staan. Toch scoren ze de grootste hit uit hun carrière met “No Scrubs”, mede dankzij de video.

De volgende single “Unpretty” bevat weer een belangrijke boodschap. Het liedje gaat over onzekerheid en zelfvertrouwen. Het wordt TLC’s vierde nummer één hit. Toch kan Left Eye het niet laten om zich regelmatig in de media uit te spreken over TLC. Ze voelt zich buitengesloten.

Het commentaar van T-Boz en Chilli: ‘we zijn als zussen en zussen maken nu eenmaal wel eens ruzie.’ Toch is het tijd voor Left Eye om vaker zonder de T en C te werken. Zo rapt ze mee op grote hits van Donell Jones (“U Know What’s Up”) en Melanie C (“Never Be The Same Again”). Eind 2001 komt haar soloalbum Supernova uit. Nummers als “Let Me Live” en “I Believe In Me” gaan over Left Eye’s onvrede over haar publieke imago.

Een bijzondere track op Supernova is “A New Star Is Born”. Hierin praat Lopes tegen haar overleden vader en vergeeft ze hem eindelijk voor alles. Ook geeft ze haar visie op de dood: energie sterft nooit, maar transformeert in iets anders. Een supernova is een ster die korte tijd heel fel schijnt en dan opeens uitdooft. Het lijkt wel alsof Lopes met deze albumtitel voorziet dat haar ster binnenkort zal doven.

Begin 2002 schijnt haar licht dan ook feller dan ooit: ze bezoekt Honduras regelmatig om te mediteren, adopteert een dochtertje genaamd Snow en werkt vol plezier aan een nieuw TLC album. Voor het eerst in haar leven lijkt Lopes innerlijke vrede te hebben gevonden. Op 25 april 2002 zal deze energie helaas transformeren tijdens een spirituele vakantie op Honduras.

Een door Lopes bestuurde auto slaat een paar keer over de kop, omdat zij de grip op het stuur verliest. De zeven andere inzittenden overleven, maar Lopes is op slag dood. Haar ster is gedoofd op 30-jarige leeftijd. De gebroken T-Boz en Chilli geven aan door te gaan met TLC, omdat ze geloven dat dat Lopes’ wens was. Hun laatste album 3D flopt door het gemis van de energieke Left Eye.

TLC maakt al lang geen muziek meer, maar “Waterfalls” zal voor altijd een klassieker zijn. En die ene zin van Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes zorgt elke keer weer voor kippenvel. Dezelfde boodschap die op haar grafsteen staat:

‘Dreams are hopeless aspirations, in hopes of coming true, believe in yourself, the rest is up to me and you.’

Het inspirerende “Blessed” is voorzien van een speelse video. Misschien anders dan we van Scott gewend zijn, maar één ding is hetzelfde: haar lach spat weer van het scherm.

In Engeland zijn ze wat verder en is “My Kind Of Love” alweer de vierde single. De muziekvideo is minstens zo prachtig als het liedje zelf. Emeli Sandé schreef het toen ze geneeskunde studeerde.

De tijdmachtine van SWV flitst ons terug naar de jaren ’90. Het stikt van de R&B meidengroepjes als TLC en En Vogue. Vooral in Amerika behoort SWV tot de populairste, dankzij het unieke stemgeluid van Cheryl “Coko” Gamble. Zij neemt dan ook het grootste deel van de solo’s voor haar rekening. Maar ook het vermogen van SWV om perfect te harmoniseren is één van de sleutels tot een groot succes.

Taj, Lelee en Coko (hun initialen vormen TLC, maar die groepsnaam is al vergeven) scoren dan ook vele hits als “Weak” en “Rain”. De meeste bekende is “Right Here”, met een sample van Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature”. Vrolijke swingbeat nummers en zwoele slow jams behoren tot de specialiteit van de zingende, swingende zusters.

Ook al stamt SWV’s laatste langspeler uit 1997, hun vierde album I Missed Us gaat geheel in deze lijn verder. Sterker nog, de nieuwe liedjes zouden zó op de albums It’s About Time en New Beginning kunnen staan. De single “Co-Sign” lijkt zelfs een beetje op de hit “You’re The One” uit 1996.

Je zou denken dat het een gedateerd album oplevert, maar niks is minder waar. Het enthousiasme spat er namelijk vanaf. Het lijkt erop dat dit geen geforceerde reünie is, want de zangeressen hebben ‘chemistry’ en de liedjes zijn aanstekelijk. I Missed Us klinkt daardoor opvallend fris, in tegenstelling tot de laatste albums van bijvoorbeeld Faith Evans en Monica.

De verdeling van de zangpartijen is wél veranderd. Tamara “Taj” Johnson-George en Leanne “Lelee” Lyons zingen tegenwoordig net zo vaak solo als Coko. Eigenlijk is dit wel jammer. De vocalen van Taj klinken wat mat en Lelee’s stem is soms wel erg zoetsappig. Coko’s strotje is nog steeds van goud en schittert vooral op een cover van Patti LaBelle’s “If Only You Knew”.

Wie een overdosis ballads verwacht, zal ook verrast zijn. I Missed Us is voorzien van een uitstekende balans tussen ballads en up-tempos. “Do Ya” en tweede single “All About You” swingen bijvoorbeeld de pan uit. En er kan zorgeloos weggezwijmeld worden op “Everything I Love”.

Meer dan tien jaar wegblijven en terugkomen met een fris, maar vertrouwd geluid: het is geen gemakkelijke prestatie. I Missed Us zal geen verkooprecords breken of talloze hits opleveren. Maar nu het R&B genre steeds meer beïnvloed raakt door pop en techno, zullen er best wel wat mensen in de tijdmachine van SWV willen stappen.

Op de eerste nacht in elke stad neemt de Grammy Award winnaar ons mee naar de tijden van ‘Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite’ en ‘Embrya’, beiden uit respectievelijk 1996 en 1998. De tweede nacht staat in het teken van ‘Now’(2001) en zijn meest recente plaat,’BLACKsummers’night’(2009). Maxwell en zijn 11-koppige band voeren elke track uit, waaronder dus tracks die nog nooit live ten gehore zijn gebracht.

De eerste video afkomstig van het Greykid’s debuut Grey Matter heet A Thought en is hieronder te beluisteren en zien. Als dit een indicatie is van de kwaliteit die gaat komen, dan kan ik niet wachten.

Dit succes hopen zij dunnetjes over te doen, nu de dames gedwongen plaats hebben gemaakt voor andere zangeressen. Maar toen Beyoncé nog oefende met haar groepje Destiny’s Child en Rihanna niet eens een tiener was, behoorden deze twee al tot een ‘hat trick’ piepjonge R&B zangeressen. Aaliyah, Brandy en Monica scoorden midden jaren ’90 al nummer één hits en platina albums, toen zij eigenlijk op school moesten zitten.

Als ze wel op school hadden gezeten, was Monica vast en zeker dat irritante meisje geweest die altijd hoge cijfers haalde zonder haar best te hoeven doen. Brandy was het ijverige, beetje onzekere meisje. Bij iedereen populair, zelfs de leraren. En Aaliyah was rustig en mysterieus, maar wist stiekem precies wat ze wilde. Monica had duidelijk de beste stem van de drie.

Monica klinkt op haar veertiende al als een volwassen zangeres. De zangtechniek heeft ze perfect van Whitney Houston afgekeken, die haar zelf ook een ‘mini Whitney’ noemt (maar dan wel zonder de fenomenale optredens). Het album Miss Thang is ook de beste van de drie debuten, omdat Monica’s liedjes door haar pittige karakter de meeste persoonlijkheid hebben.

Het gaat allemaal vanzelf, dus hard werken is er voor Monica niet bij. Als je “It All Belongs To Me” vergelijkt met “The Boy Is Mine” valt meteen op dat ze exact hetzelfde klinkt als veertien jaar geleden. Brandy’s stem is daarentegen enorm gegroeid. Ze gebruikt hem niet alleen anders, ze zingt ook met veel meer enthousiasme dan Monica en brengt het matige nummer tot leven.

Dit is eigenlijk tekenend voor Monica’s hele carrière. Terwijl Aaliyah en Brandy naar een eigen geluid zoeken en zich artistiek ontwikkelen, staat Monica stil. Zo nu en dan gaat ze de studio in om weer hetzelfde kunstje te doen. Dankzij slim gekozen producers als Missy Elliott blijft ze succesvol. Met “Everything To Me” scoort Monica in 2010 zelfs één van de grootste hits uit haar carrière. Haar comeback album Still Standing staat vol met soortgelijke liedjes.

De passie waarmee ze dit album maakte, is op New Life afwezig. Monica klinkt ongeïnspireerd op de vele routineuze mid-tempos als “Daddy’s Good Girl”, “Without You” en “Amazing”. Ze zingt alles op dezelfde manier, waardoor je de liedjes bijna niet van elkaar kunt onderscheiden.

De weinige keren dat Monica wat nieuws probeert, klinkt het geforceerd. “Man Who Has Everything” heeft een reggae-invloed, maar het past niet echt bij Monica. Ook het duet met rapper Wale, “Take A Chance”, klinkt als een aftreksel van Alicia Keys’ “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart” als Monica het zingt. Het lijkt erop dat producer Rico Love tijdens de opnames enthousiaster was dan de zangeres zelf, al is zijn werk ook niet echt baanbrekend.

De twee uitschieters op New Life zijn geproduceerd door Lamb. “Until It’s Gone” en “Big Mistake” zijn gevoelige ballads, Monica’s specialiteit. Weinig moeite heeft ze er vast niet voor gedaan, maar het geeft wel het beste resultaat. En daar zit het probleem.

Monica is nog steeds het eigenwijze meisje dat geen zin heeft om haar inzet te verbeteren. Zolang ze met haar hakken over de sloot blijft gaan, hoeft dat van haar ook niet. Met New Life heeft ze alleen geen voldoende kunnen scoren. Misschien is het tijd voor bijles?

BTSTU was één van mijn favoriete tracks van 2011 en zette Jai Paul op de kaart. De stilte daarna deed de hype iets afnemen, maar gelukkig is daar dan eindelijk weer iets nieuws: Jasmine.

Na enkele audities te hebben gezien werd ik aangenaam verrassend door de auditie van Vince Kidd. Net als Max Milner vorige week (die een gezongen versie opvoerde van Eminem’s Lose Yourself), gaf ook Vincent een volledig originele interpretatie van Madonna’s Like A Virgin. Dit keer voorzien van een geweldige soul-twist (denk aan een heerlijk foute, maar toch excellente kruising tussen Color Me Badd en Jon B).

In tegenstelling tot de weinig verrassende optredens die te zien waren op de Nederlandse variant, moet ik toch echt toegeven dat de UK aardig wat aanstormend muzikaal talent herbergt.

Na een kleine zoektocht online vond ik ook wat andere nummers van Vince Kidd. And I gotta say, I like his style.

Wat betekent muziek voor jou?
Music is mijn leven. Het staat voor power, individualisme, geluk, stijl, creativiteit en het meest belangrijke, namelijk hoop. Muziek is voor mij verreweg de meest krachtige kunstvorm in het eleveren van onze geest.

Hoe ben je begonnen in hip hop?
Ik ben niet begonnen met hip hop, hip hop begon met mij. Ik ben opgegroeid in LA en was altijd al gek op muziek. Toen ik eindelijk de kans kreeg om de studio in te duiken, werd ik echt verliefd op hip hop. Toen kon ik niet meer terug!

Hoe heeft opgroeien in LA je muziek beïnvloed?
California speelt een hele grote rol in mijn muziek, het is waar ik ben opgegroeid. Mijn muziek is een extensie van mijn levenservaringen. Ik kan vertellen over de negatieve kanten; het leven in the hood en ook de positieve kanten; het keihard werken om uit the hood te komen.

Wat breng jij hip hop dat anders is dan andere artiesten?
Ik ben een artiest die het echt niet kan schelen wat men van me denkt. Natuurlijk willen we allemaal geaccepteerd worden maar net zo goed wil ik de soort muziek maken die ik wil maken, dat geeft me voldoening.

Met welke artiesten zou je op wereldtournee willen als jij de line-up mocht kiezen?
Ik heb veel respect voor de muziek van Drake, J Cole, Meek Mill, Wale, Wiz Khalifa, Asap Rocky, Reek Da Villian, Ace Hood en Big Krit. Dus met hen zou ik graag een line up vormen. Ik denk dat de volgende generatie hip hop een van de beste ooit zal worden!

Waar zie je jezelf over 5 jaar?
Ik werk iedere dag keihard om mijn droom en doelen te bereiken. Over vijf jaar wil ik gezien worden als de beste, meest gerespecteerde rapartiest en eveneens zakenman. Ik zie mezelf als eigenaar van verschillende bedrijven en natuurlijk maak ik nogsteeds krachtige, creatieve muziek.

Wat heb je dit jaar voor ons in petto?
Mijn nieuwe mixtape, getiteld “The Layover”, komt in juni 2012 uit. Ik kijk er naar uit de mixtape te delen met mijn fans in Nederland. Op de mixtape staan ook een paar collabo’s met andere artiesten.

Daar kan ik nog niets over zeggen want daar zijn we op dit moment nog mee bezig.

Het zijn zeer gewaardeerde artiesten maar ik ga een paar van mijn grote verrassingen op “The Layover” niet verklappen!

Wat weet je van Amsterdam?
Ik weet dat Nederlanders één van de meest bescheiden, aardige, gezellige en meest open mensen ter wereld zijn. Ik heb zoveel fantastische dingen gehoord over Nederland. Ik wil daar echt een huis kopen, big shout out naar iedereen daar!

Wanneer kom je ons in Nederland een bezoekje brengen?
Ik wil snel een tour plannen en Nederland is één van de plekken waar ik echt heen wil. Niet alleen omdat ik geïntrigeerd ben door het land maar ook omdat de mensen zo cool zijn! Dus Nederlandse promotors in Amsterdam en omgeving, neem contact op met mijn managers Chippy en Eazy en boek me voor shows!

Op dat project presenteerde OnCue zich als een jeudige emcee met humor, zelfvertrouwen, diepgang en een redelijke zangstem. Vooral de eerste single Feel Tall kwam voor velen als een verrassing. Tussen de gevatte one-liners bleek een diepgewortelde frustratie schuil te gaan (het refrein doet veel emotie oproepen). Ondanks de emo-achtige boodschap en delivery, laat Feel Tall vooral een positief gevoel achter bij de luisteraar. Een uiterst geslaagde tactiek die op de mixtape meerdere malen toegepast zou worden.

Kinda Late is een ander type song. It’s plain fun! Gewoon ouderwets lol trappen en dollen. Denk eind jaren tachtig, begin jaren negentig; leuke teksten, catchy hook en een hilarische video.

Deze jongen gaat het helemaal maken. Mark my words!

QT: Jullie muziek bevat veel soul. Waar komt al die soul vandaan?
Papa: Onze ouders hebben ons grootgebracht met alle grootheden uit hun tijd zoals Donny Hathaway, Sam Cooke, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder en The Temptations. En wij vinden dat echtheid mensen raakt en het verbind  met elkaar. Die rauwe emotie willen wij delen. We spreken niet alleen voor onszelf maar voor een hele generatie. Soms moet je daarvoor heel diep naar binnen gaan om het echte te kunnen brengen.

QT: Ieder nieuw album betekent groei. Op welke manier hebben jullie jezelf uitgedaagd met dit album?
Papa: Ons doel was om de perfecte samensmelting te maken tussen new school en old school soul. We hebben onszelf uitgedaagd door zo diep mogelijk te graven om precies dat level soul te krijgen waarmee iedereen zich kan identificeren; of je nu 18 jaar of 80 jaar oud bent. Het is soms moeilijk om de goede hoeveelheid soul te pakken te krijgen en dat over te brengen naar het publiek. Dus dat was een uitdaging. Maar we denken dat het best goed heeft uitgepakt.

QT: Wat was het moeilijkst aan het opnemen van Somethin’ Soulful?
Papa: Het moeilijkste was eigenlijk dat we superhelden probeerden te zijn. We wilden in de studio tijdens het opnameproces echt alles zelf doen. Maar ik denk dat we het nu wel onder de knie hebben!

QT: Wat wil jullie als artiesten bereiken?
Papa: We willen herinnerd worden als artiesten die echt hun hart en ziel hebben gegeven. We willen ons kapot gezongen en geschreven hebben en overal ter wereld op het podium gestaan hebben. Al van kinds af aan is het onze droom om over de hele wereld op te treden. We stoppen niet totdat we dit bereikt hebben.

QT: Wat inspireerde jullie om de track “Sex Education” te schrijven?
Papa: “Sex Education” kwam eigenlijk heel natuurlijk. De tekst kwam vanzelf toen we de beat hoorden. Het deed ons denken aan hoeveel mensen verlangen naar sex maar het niet op de juiste manier ervaren. Dus hebben we er een nummer aan gewijd. We hopen dat het zijn doel gediend heeft.

QT: “Freedom” is een krachtige track. Kun je vertellen waar het nummer over gaat?
Jake: “Freedom” gaat over de verschillende vormen van oppressie die we allemaal ervaren. Op een dag liep ik op straat en zag ik zoveel dingen waar ik moeilijk mee kon leven. Ik zag zoveel dingen die ik niet kon veranderen en dat frustreerde me.  Ik kon niet anders dan erover schrijven.  Het zijn dingen die we allemaal meemaken: honger en armoede, relatieproblemen en zelfs het overlijden van mensen van wie we houden. “Freedom” is een uiting van alle pijn die we doormaken en het verlangen om op een dag van dit alles bevrijd te zijn.

QT: “Kiss em off” en “Ashes” zijn hele bijzondere en mooie, gevoelige nummers. Is “Ashes” een ode aan Donny Hathaway? Kun je  wat meer vertellen over dit nummer?
Jake: Dank je. “Ashes” is het verhaal van een man die al zijn vertrouwen en liefde aan een vrouw geeft maar bedrogen uitkomt. Hij ontdekt dat zijn liefde voor haar niet wordt beantwoord. Terwijl hij op het dak van een brandend gebouw zit, wacht hij op haar om gered te worden. Maar hij komt erachter dat zij niet genoeg om hem geeft om zijn leven te redden. Niet alleen is de muziek van “Ashes” geïnspireerd door Donny Hathaway, maar ook de pijn en hartzeer in het nummer. Het is een hartverscheurend verhaal. We hopen dat de wereld zich erin kan herkennen.

QT: Is “Ashes” gebaseerd op je persoonlijke ervaring?
Jake: Ja, “Ashes” is gebaseerd op mijn persoonlijke ervaring in combinatie met wat ik om me heen gezien heb. Daarom is het nummer zo persoonlijk voor mij.

QT: Wat kunnen we van Jake&Papa in 2012 verwachten?
Papa: Dit jaar willen we veel gaan toeren. Daar zijn we vooral mee bezig. We gaan keihard in 2012, we gaan door… until we get what’s ours!

QT: Wanneer komen jullie naar Nederland voor een optreden?
Papa: Vraag jullie club promoters en boekers om ons te boeken en we zitten op het eerst volgende toestel naar Amsterdam!

QT: Wat weten jullie over Nederland?
Papa: We weten niet veel over Nederland maar daar willen we snel verandering in brengen. We horen dat de vrouwen adembenemend zijn. We willen wel zien hoe dat zit.

QT: Is er nog iets dat jullie willen delen?

Op haar tweede album The MF Life brengt Fiona wat variatie in haar geluid aan. Iets meer rustige nummers en ook wat hip hop. Opener “This Time” bewijst meteen dat Fiona’s stem uitermate goed klinkt over de groovy beats. Ook “Running”, geproduceerd door Salaam Remi, is een topper dankzij de rap van Nas en Fiona’s ijzersterke vocalen.

Deze vocalen worden door producer Rico Love vervormd op “4 AM”, al een grote hit in Amerika. Het levert een spannend nummer op met een flinke climax. Gelukkig wordt de autotune beperkt tot “4 AM” en kan Fiona’s stem volledig tot zijn recht komen op ballads als het prachtige “Wrong Side Of A Love Song”.

Ook “Gone And Never Coming Back” is een emotionele ballad, maar wel weer één met pit. Dit is eigenlijk het typische ‘MF geluid’, ook te horen op “Break Down These Walls” en “Change The Record”. Door dit bombastische geluid te beperken tot enkele nummers, komt het allemaal beter uit de verf dan op The Bridge.

Dat Melanie Fiona experimenteert met allerlei stijlen, maakt haar interessanter dan veel collega’s. The MF Life is misschien iets gladder dan zijn voorganger, maar Fiona’s ballen doen haar nog steeds uitblinken in de glibberige R&B wereld.

De door Exile geproduceerde Cops Get Scared Of Me zal daarop gefeatured staan.

Net als met zijn debuut Ultra, Nostalgia, is ook hier de songwriting de onderscheidende factor. Frank weet zijn gevoel altijd zo te verwoorden dat zijn lyrics hip, oprecht en poetisch overkomen op de luisteraar. Daarbij weet hij als geen enkele andere R&B zanger het clichématige te omzeilen. White is daar alweer het zoveelste voorbeeld van.

Onze aandacht gaat vandaag uit naar komiek en  YouTube-sensatie Maurice Kain Carter.

Via zijn YouTube account (hij heeft er inmiddels al twee) heeft de jonge Maurice ruim 65 miljoen views bij elkaar weten te sparen. Zijn filmpjes variëren in speelduur (van 2 minuten tot soms wel een kwartier) en hanteren een zekere sketch/stand-up format. De video voor “It all Belongs To Me” werd twee dagen na het overlijden van Whitney Houston opgenomen. Monica en Brandy waren kapot door het verlies van hun grote idool, maar dat is niet te merken aan hun energie.

Inderdaad, Estelle is beïnvloed door de hip hop soul van Blige en Lauryn Hill. Met laatstgenoemde werd zij dan ook vaak vergeleken toen debuutalbum The 18th Day uitkwam. De combinatie van rap en zang deden denken aan een Britse versie van L-Boogie.

Dit rauwe geluid maakte op Shine plaats voor een commerciëlere sound. Met succes, want de singles “American Boy” en “Come Over” werden grote hits. Meteen viel op dat Estelle minder rapte en meer zong. Opvallend, omdat zij niet de allerbeste vocalist is.

Juist de combinatie van zang en rap met Brits accent, maakte haar een frisse wind in de urban wereld. Maar ook Estelle’s huidige stijl ligt goed in het gehoor, omdat haar persoonlijkheid de poppy liedjes een eigen karakter geeft. Deze stijl hanteert ze jammer genoeg niet op het hele album.

All Of Me opent met het lekkere “The Life”, waarop Estelle weer even rapt. Op de tweede track “International (Serious)” is zij nauwelijks te horen, maar het wordt vast een hit dankzij de bijdrages van Chris Brown en Trey Songz. Net als “Break My Heart” met rapper Rick Ross lijkt dit nummer vooral te zijn gemaakt om te scoren bij het Amerikaanse publiek.

Estelle komt juist volledig tot haar recht op frisse liedjes als “Back To Love”, ”Love The Way We Used To” en “Wonderful Life”. Deze klinken uniek en laten een positief gevoel achter. Net als het ultracoole “Cold Crush”, misschien wel het beste nummer op het album. Die eer zou ook naar energiebommetje “Do My Thing” kunnen gaan, waarop Janelle Monáe meedoet.

All Of Me is een onsamenhangend album, omdat sommige standaard liedjes de frisheid van een rappende London-chick wegkapen. Enkele interludes met diepzinnig bedoelde gesprekjes moeten voor een homogeen gevoel zorgen, maar halen het niveau juist omlaag. Bovendien zijn het schaamteloze ‘rip-offs’ van de interludes op The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Toen Estelle in 2004 doorbrak was zij een grote belofte. Met album nummer drie maakt ze deze nog steeds niet helemaal waar. Op All Of Me kunnen we haar frisse wind weer eens voelen en horen. Maar het is jammer dat Estelle’s frisse wind niet hard genoeg waait.

Bijgestaan door zijn vaste band, soulzanger Bilal en rapper Lupe Fiasco, maakt Robert Glasper een verpletterende indruk met de live opvoering van het nummer Always Shine.

Ian Eastwood is jong, getalenteerd en origineel. Zijn choreo’s hebben een natuurlijke ‘flow’ en zijn tevens tot in de kleinste details perfect op maat van de beat geconstrueerd.

“Pretty Lil Heart” is zijn zoveelste samenwerking met rapper Lil Wayne en heeft daardoor flinke hitpotentie. Maar net als bij Erykah Badu’s video for “Honey” kun je je afvragen: wat doet die aap in de video?

Milo Takes Baths is een korte EP met 7 compleet nieuwe nummers, volledig geproduceerd door indie producer Baths. Zoals gebruikelijk bij Milo zijn de songtitels weer een klasse apart.

Als je “Co-Sign” hoort, denk je misschien dat het gewoon een oud nummer uit de SWV-kelder is. Maar in de video zien we dat de dames echt wat jaartjes ouder zijn. Hoe dan ook: deze Sisters hebben nog steeds prachtige Voices.

De man heeft enkel een paar losse tracks en korte EP’s uitgebracht, maar de hype is nu al voldoende om zijn debuutalbum meteen naar de ‘top of the charts’ te lanceren. En ook dat gaat gebeuren, mark my words!

Lasan is een nieuwe track, onlangs verschenen via het Soundcloud kanaal van Michael Kiwanuka. Dit keer geholpen door de muzikale hand van Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) leveren de twee heren een mooie piano-gedreven soultrack. Dit soort tracks doen de verwachtingen voor zijn debuut alleen maar verhogen.

Met “Magic”, afkomstig van Something Else, scoort hij zijn grootste hit en op Sex Therapy gaan alle remmen los. Thicke presenteert zich als een tweede Justin Timberlake: een gladde sexpert met hoge stem. Liedjes als “Sex Therapy” en “It’s In The Mornin’” lijken vooral bedoeld om snel te scoren. Ook de vele gastbijdragen laten het gevoel van een vluggertje achter.

Voor zijn nieuwe project heeft Robin Thicke weer een nieuw kapsel, maar zijn geluid is oud en vertrouwd. Hij verkiest romantiek boven snelle seks, veel zwoele ballads en mid-tempos dus. Deze stijl past het beste bij hem, Thicke is een pro op dit gebied. Dit maakt Love After War zijn beste album sinds The Evolution of Robin Thicke.

Natuurlijk zijn er wat uitzonderingen. Het album opent stevig met “An Angel On Each Arm” en “I’m An Animal”. Ook blijft Thicke zijn vrouwelijke fans verleiden - “Love After War” is een subtiele verwijzing naar goedmaakseks – maar het ligt er minder dik bovenop.

Het is knap hoe Thicke het voor elkaar krijgt soulvolle liedjes te maken die zo makkelijk in het gehoor liggen. Een soort moderne Motown zanger dus. Nummers als “Never Give Up” en “All Tied Up” zijn heerlijk luistermateriaal. En ook al is de strekking van “Mission”,”Boring” en “Tears On My Tuxedo” hetzelfde, het klinkt niet als dertien in een dozijn.

Tweede single “Pretty Lil Heart” met rapper Lil Wayne, is eigenlijk het enige nummer dat een chart-attack als doel lijkt te hebben. Met Love After War wil Robin Thicke minder makkelijk scoren, maar de bevrediging is groter.

De release van Camp in Europa staat voor de deur en dat betekent een nieuwe single met begeleidende video. De keuze voor Heartbeat is een slimme; het is één van de betere nummer op het album Camp en het heeft bovendien een zeer aanstekelijk refreintje.

Niemand zal ontkennen dat de komst van Bobby Brown in haar leven een bepaalde verwoesting met zich mee bracht. Haar drugsverslaving en huwelijksperikelen deden de glansrijke carrière van deze uiterst getalenteerde vrouw in de schaduw verdwijnen.

Haar muziek leeft echter voort. Hieronder zijn een drietal fenomenale acapellas van miss Houston te beluisteren en te downloaden. Enjoy!

Net als Jackson valt Houston van haar voetstuk als schandalen haar muziekcarrière beginnen te overschaduwen. Fans vertrouwen er echter op dat Nippy, Houston’s bijnaam, haar turbulente periode kan overwinnen. Dit zorgt ervoor dat I Look To You begin september 2009 op nummer 1 staat in de Amerikaanse albumlijst.

Deze terugkeer is van korte duur. Vooral haar liveoptredens laten te wensen over en doen vermoeden dat Houston’s stem nooit meer als vanouds wordt. Op 11 februari 2012 is duidelijk dat zij geen kans meer krijgt om het tegendeel te bewijzen. Whitney Houston wordt dood in bad gevonden op haar hotelkamer.

Aretha Franklin als peettante, Dionne Warwick als nicht én een moeder die gospelzangeres is. In zo’n omgeving moet je bijna wel zangeres worden. Whitney Houston begint dan ook te zingen in de kerk. Haar uitmuntende stem en het uiterlijk van een fotomodel, zorgen er al snel voor dat ze ontdekt wordt door platenbaas Clive Davis. Haar debuut Whitney Houston is een groot succes en een superster is geboren.

Het duurt even voor dit album af is. Veel producers willen niet met Houston werken, omdat haar gospelstem niet zou passen in het poplandschap. Uiteindelijk blijkt juist haar geperfectioneerde zangtechniek de popliedjes tot juweeltjes te maken. De techniek van een ervaren gospelzangeres. Ook de live-uitvoeringen zijn fenomenaal door Houston’s enorme overgave en professionaliteit.

Het succes groeit en groeit gedurende de jaren ’80 en ’90 en bereikt een hoogtepunt als zij in 1992 de hoofdrol speelt in The Bodyguard. Voor de soundtrack neemt ze Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” op. Haar uitvoering, inclusief acapella intro en dramatische finale, is zó indrukwekkend dat het weken aan de top staat in alle charts en haar de status van icoon oplevert.

Houston’s imago is lange tijd net zo onberispelijk als haar stem. Daar komt verandering in door haar huwelijk met zanger Bobby Brown en geruchten over een drugsverslaving. Maar Whitney laat zich niet uit het veld slaan en levert eind 1998 zelfs haar beste album af.

Op My Love Is Your Love klinkt Houston krachtiger dan ooit. Power ballads als “Until You Come Back” worden afgewisseld door nummers met een ‘bite’ zoals “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay”. Deze ‘vocal performance’ levert Whitney haar zesde Grammy Award op. Het wordt helaas haar laatste belangrijke muziekprijs.

Na My Love Is Your Love gaat het snel bergafwaarts met het succes. Toch laat Houston regelmatig haar stem horen. Tijdens de repetities voor Clive Davis’ Grammy feestje staat Whitney zelf niet in de spotlight. Ze geeft zangtips aan haar protegés Monica en Brandy en zingt een liedje met Kelly Price.

Haar laatste publieke optreden is een uitvoering van het gospelnummer “Yes, Jesus Loves Me”. Niemand weet op dat moment hoe toepasselijk deze keuze is. Ook de tekst van haar allerlaatste single “I Look To You” krijgt een diepere betekenis door haar overlijden: God hielp haar door alles heen.

Houston wordt gezien als één van de beste vocalisten die de wereld ooit kende. Zij werd slechts 48 jaar, maar hij blijft voor altijd te horen op onvergetelijke liedjes als “ “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” en “The Greatest Love Of All,” de onsterfelijke stem van Whitney Houston.

Scrollend door het lijstje moet ik toegeven dat het niet eens zo’n slechte samenstelling is. Helaas ontbreken er wel een groot aantal klassiekers. Laat ons weten welke nummers jij er graag in had gezien.

Still Standing is geen bijzondere track, vandaar dat het voor mij onbegrijpelijk blijft dat juist dit nummer een videoclipbehandeling krijgt. Had deze ‘treatment’ veel liever gezien voor de track Evolve (beste nummer op de plaat).

In Nederland draait de film in bijna 60 bioscopen en kwam na het eerste weekend als hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer binnen op nr. 7 in de Top 20 van best bezochte films. De cast bestaat onder andere uit Raymond Thiry, Katja Schuurman, Birgit Schuurman, de kickboksers Sem Schilt en Joop Kasteel, en rappers Willie Wartaal en Kempi.

Via zijn site stelde Skewby enkele weken geleden een vraag aan de fans: “Welke beat moest hij blessen met een rap?”

De uiteindelijke keuze is gevallen op Blue Ruby van hip-hop producer Apollo Brown. Het resultaat? I’ll let you be the judge of that.

De psychedelische beats vliegen je meteen vanaf de eerste track om de oren. En dat vraagt om een bijpassende videoclip.

Vodka & Ayahuascu is de titeltrack van het project en de bijbehorende videoclip is simpelweg één van de leukste, meest originele hip-hop videoclips in de afgelopen vijf jaar.  My hat is off to the director.

En nog voor het nieuwe jaar van start ging werd hij door diverse bladen, websites en muziekjournalisten bestempeld als ‘the next big thing’ in hip-hop. Of A$AP Rocky dat ook echt waar gaat maken moet nog blijken. Met de video voor Wassup is hij in ieder geval al op het goede spoor.

Na het succes van haar eerste officiële single ‘Only Wanna Give It To You’ met J.Cole wilde Varner haar fans niet lang laten wachten op nieuw materiaal. Voor de soundtrack neemt Beyoncé enkele covers op en voor de film zet zij een blonde pruik à la Etta op. James is niet onder de indruk en geeft tijdens een optreden een snerp richting Beyoncé. Haar zoon verklaart later dat het een grapje was.

Ook al past het bij James’ pittige karakter, geruchten gaan al snel dat het eigenlijk komt door haar beginnende dementie. Inderdaad, Etta James heeft gezondheidsklachten. Ze lijdt ook aan leukemie en hepatitis C. Op 20 januari overlijdt Etta James op 73-jarige leeftijd aan een longontsteking.

Wat de verklaring voor haar snerp ook is, stiekem had James wel gelijk. Hoe perfect Beyoncé “At Last” ook zingt, zij kan niet tippen aan Etta James. De blonde pruik en aangezette wenkbrauwen maken Beyoncé er ook niet bepaald mooier op. Etta James is geen klassieke schoonheid, maar het blonde haar en de grote wenkbrauwen staan haar wél verbazend goed. Deze benadrukken dan ook haar brutale persoonlijkheid. De persoonlijkheid van een grote pop-, R&B-, maar vooral blueszangeres: Jamesetta Hawkins. Artiestennaam: Etta James.

‘Oooh I’m so blue,’ zo luiden Etta’s eerste woorden op haar debuutalbum At Last!. De bluesliedjes als “Trust In Me” en “Stormy Weather” schudt James zo uit haar mouw, aangezien ze als kind door haar moeder op een dieet van Billie Holiday werd gezet. Het album heet At Last! omdat het even op zich liet wachten.

Ook al valt James’ talent in haar tienerjaren al op bij een groot publiek, haar carrière komt niet van de grond. James heeft het helemaal gehad. Maar als ze een contract tekent bij Argo Records komt - at last! - alles goed. Het emotionele uitstorten van een 22-jarige Etta James op At Last! is adembenemend. Vele succesvolle albums volgen. En een heroïneverslaving.

Precies 51 jaar na At Last!, november 2011, brengt James The Dreamer uit. Ze verklaart dat dit haar laatste album zal zijn. Etta weet dat ze zal gaan, maar ze gaat swingend. Haar stem klinkt dieper dan normaal en het tempo van de nummers ligt iets lager. Maar geen Etta James zonder platinablond haar, zien we op de albumcover. Dit en de rauwe vocalen op The Dreamer maken duidelijk: Etta James is en blijft ’blond and blue’.

Het meest populaire Etta James liedje zal ongetwijfeld “At Last” blijven. Dat zij niet meer onder ons is, maakt het nummer zo mogelijk nog magischer. Als het orkest inzet en James’ stem over de strijkers danst, zweeft ze weg.

Etta James is in de hemel misschien verlost van haar blues. Maar ze is vast een brutaal engeltje met blond haar en dikke, zwarte wenkbrauwen.

2011 was a good year for music!

Here are my favorite ten songs of the past twelve months.

10. “Craft Brewed” (ft. Silent Knight) – J57

Another year, another list almost done! The last and (in my opinion) best 10 songs of 2011. Here it goes. The ten-spot goes to the song “Craft Brewed” by J57, who is a relative newcomer to hip-hop (I saw his name attached to several projects this year). The drums on here are just amazing. This is one of those jams that when I hear it, the volume gets a cranking. It just sounds so danceable and bouncy. I have yet to hear this in a club setting, but I imagine it’ll work like magic.

The song isn’t that old (released around November I think), it was part of a Brown Bag AllStars compilation I found on the net. The production on “Craft Brewed” immediately made J57 a candidate for my ‘ones to watch in 2012’ list. The beat is hard-hitting! One of the hardest I’ve heard all year round. Looking forward to hearing more, and Silent Knight did an his thing on this beat. His flow and voice matched quite nicely.

9. “Thuggin” – Freddie Gibbs & Madlib

The marriage of Freddie Gibbs’ impeccable flow and Madlib’ strangely hypnotic production is one that is blessed beyond belief. This short EP proves that; so much so that the full-length album, which is in the works according to Stones Throw, jumped to the very top of my most anticipated list for 2012.

We’ve already passed Freddie once in my list, so this little thing of beauty is his second entry for 2011. And I’m hoping to be hearing a whole lot more from this ferociously fierce emcee. Madlib needs no introduction. His name can almost always be found in any best of list; it’s practically synonyms with quality. Although the high output does tend to fuck up his garbage vs. quality ratio, but considering the gems this man has produced I’d say the scale is still tipped in his favor.

The beat for “Thuggin” is one of the best I’ve heard all year. It’s got this crazy sitar sounding melody line that is just so fucking addictive. And then having Freddie come in and finish the thing of with his undeniable flow. Well, that’s just perfection right there!

8. “Yonkers” – Tyler The Creator

The brilliance of the track “Yonkers” is undeniable. It’s minimalist rap at its very best. Tyler’s blasphemous monologue plays like very dark poetry against a horror movie backdrop. Who would have ever thought that a song like this would be an ideal party anthem? I’m serious! This song is guaranteed to get the party jumping.

Over the course of the past 12 month I’ve witnessed it on several occasions. Whether it be at the North Sea Jazz festival, where Flying Lotus played the shit out of that track, or during an Odd Future concert; bodies are bound to shake, bounce, twist and do several other moves you taught were unimaginable in combination with this song.

Oh, and while we’re on the subject; that Queens Day concert the Odd Future boys and girl gave at the Paradiso in Amsterdam was total bananas. I have never experienced anything like it. People were jumping off the balcony for Christ sakes. It was AWESOME!

“Yonkers” is a unique song. It’s just too bad the rest of that Tyler the Creator album was complete and utter garbage. There are moments of brilliance (especially where Tyler’s lyricism is concerned), but overall it was a complete mess.

7. “Surph” – Rustie

I wasn’t immediately convinced by Rustie’s debut. My first listen even resulted in me turning off ‘that racket’. “Glass Swords” can come across as an intensely chaotic mess. That’s how I first felt about that album. The throwing together of different genres, combined with the huge amount of electronic noises was quite overwhelming.

It wasn’t until I heard the songs separate from one another that I started to appreciate what Rustie did here. I particularly love the more 2-step oriented stuff on here. “Surph” being the prime example! The built-up here is excellent. That moment when the vocals go from distorted to cristal clear is breathtaking (2:38). I remember jumping out of my seat the first time I heard that bit. The excitement was fucking tangible.

Once you find your footing in “Glass Swords” certain patterns will start to emerge and you’ll see that the chaos you heard before is actually quite organized. Impressive stuff!

6. “Mega….” – Willie Evans Jr.

“Introducing” by Willie Evans Jr. is a must-listen for any self-respecting hip hop head. Willie Evans Jr. is someone I’ve been a fan of since the day he release that “Communication” LP through the Rawkus 50 project (about three years ago now). And while I had high expectations for “Introducing”, I never expected this. It’s fantastic! Without a doubt one of the best LP’s to come out this year.

Willie’s MF DOOM like flow and exquisite beat selection are just two of the many things this emcee and this project have going for it. There’s also Willie’s skilful wordplay and relatable subject matter. But the thing he does most effectively is avoiding the pitfall of trying to be someone he’s not. The humor, the stories, and the tone all feel genuine; making this a feast to listen to. The blend of ol’ skool and new skool elements seem s to work perfectly here.

I fell in love with “Mega” for the very first moment that vocal sample touched my eardrum. This right here is hip-hop! Let’s hope Willie Evans Jr. gets signed to a label like Stones Throw; this man deserves a bigger following.

5. “The Vent” – Big K.R.I.T.

I had heard several songs from Big K.R.I.T. over the past two years, but none of them really peaked my interest. His Southern accent might have even put me off a bit. But when I listened to his “Returnof4eva” mixtape at the start of 2011, I was hooked. Usually the first thing that grabs me with any new album is the production. But that wasn’t the case here. From the very first bar, I found myself hanging on every rhyme. This especially goes for the more introspective songs (and “Returnof4eva” has quite a few of those).

“The Vent” represents more than just some heartfelt bars over a minimal beat. It’s the type of song that sets you apart from other rappers. The one track that makes you stand out in a scene run over with mediocrity, that’s what “The Vent” is for Big K.R.I.T.. The production is okay, but ultimately unimportant. Big K.R.I.T. could have done this song in spoken word and it would still have the same impact (and maybe even more).

The lyrics are what make this song. And instead of explaining their beauty I’d rather you’d listen to the song and take it all in, verse for verse.

4. “The Morning” & “Initiation” – The Weeknd

I’m cheating a bit here, but I simply could not choose. So I decided not to choose! Both “The Morning” and “Initiation” deserve to be mentioned in any list where the year’s best are compiled. So I did just that. Both tracks are great, but they do evoke different feelings/emotions. “Initiation” has a really dark tone but still maintains a sense of sensuality, while “The Morning” is more laidback and hazy.

The Weeknd’s whole subdued, atmospheric soundscape really won me over this year. It’s has this smooth, sensual and even contemplative nature, making it easy accessible and suitable in any situation. But ultimately this remains the perfect baby-making soundtrack.

It’s no surprise then that The Weeknd has gathered such a massive following in such a short time-span. While the other two projects (Thursday & Echoes Of Silence) didn’t quite match the level of smoldering sexyness as House Of Balloons, they did show some interesting progression in this man’s work. I for one am looking forward to the first major label studio release by R&B’s savior aka The Weeknd.

3. “Magic” (ft. Chords) – Looptroop Rockers

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with Looptroop. They have been kind of hit-or-miss these days. I’m not being negative about the group or their music; it’s just that some of their ideas and experiments just don’t mesh well together. Often resulting in an admirable attempt, but never quite hitting the target.

With this song however they hit their mark! It is one of the few songs this year that actually got year-round playtime from me; whether it be in the car, at home or at work. That song got more than enough airtime. And every second, minute, hour was deserved.

Usually it’s producer Embee that takes the spotlight in this group, but here it’s Promoe’s heartfelt honesty and lyrical ability.

2. “Tell Me A Tale” – Michael Kiwanuka

I am not a fan of Adele! I think she’s a good songwriter, but I find her lacking in almost every other department (especially character). Now I’m not saying she makes bad music, it’s just not for me. But I’m glad she’s around, cause it’s because of her that I found out about Kiwanuka.

After an onslaught of British soul singers (Duffy, Amy, Adele) these past few years it’s refreshing to finally hear a young male artist take that genre by storm. His music has an authentically vintage soul sound, just like the other artists I’ve named. But Michael Kiwanuka doesn’t do what his predecessors have done. He doesn’t try to be hip. His music doesn’t need that, and neither does he. So what we get here is a rich sound that goes back several decades, which hasn’t been updated or manipulated. The only additive provided by Michael Kiwanuka are the beautiful lyrics, and let’s be honest, there’s not much need for anything else.

“The title track is absolute ear-candy for anyone yearning for the sound of 1960s American jazz-tinted soul. Wonderful brass instrumentation and string overlays give the track a very uplifting jazz feel. 1. “The Wilhelm Scream” – James Blake

And my pick for best song of the year 2011 is “The Wilhelm Scream” by James Blake. His debut album introduced the world to two things: 1. James Blake’s hauntingly beautiful falsetto; 2. a refined understanding of the subtlety of electronic music. Even months after its initial release I find myself going back to this particular song; this song is actually quite simple in its production as well as the song writing. Maybe that’s the key to its devastating beauty; there’s no bullshit to sort through. It’s just words brought to life through sound.

Now listening to this song at home or through your headphones is quite the journey, but to really get the full experience I’d advise you to go see James Blake perform live. I attended his performance at the North Sea Jazz festival. We were coming from Raphael Saadiq and James Blake was already 10 minutes into his set. When we finally got there all the seats were filled. I managed to find a spot on the left side of the room and planted my ass on the floor. So there I was, laying on the floor (which a whole lot of people were doing), with my eyes closed, and then this song came on in waves over the sound system. I could literally feel my body trembling from the overwhelming bass. One of the best concert moments I’ve had in recent history, and a truly deserved number one spot for “The Wilhelm Scream” by James Blake.

DJ Jane Doe en DJ Turne zullen de muzikale omlijsting van de Basement Party verzorgen.

Guilty Simpson uit Detroit vergaarde bekendheid als rapper met het album Ode to the Ghetto dat hij in 2008 uitbracht op Stones Throw. Hierna volgde in 2010 een collabo album met Stones Throw producer Madlib met de titel O.J. Simpson. Daarnaast bracht Guilty Simpson afgelopen jaar in samenwerking met Sean Price en Black Milk het zeer goed ontvangen Random Axe album uit en tourde hij met Random Axe over de wereld.

MED is een verbastering van Medaphoar, een naam die je voor het eerst kon zien op de hoes van Lootpack’s classic album Soundpieces: Da Antidote uit 1999. Het duurde tot 2005 voordat MED met zijn debuutalbum Push Comes To Shove kwam met beats van Madlib, J Dilla, Oh No & Just Blaze. In 2011 bracht MED zijn tweede plaat uit met de titel Classic. En dat is misschien niet eens voorbarig gezien de uitstekende tracks op die plaat.

Entourage is een Amerikaanse televisieserie, oorspronkelijk uitgezonden door HBO, over de opkomende filmster Vincent Chase en zijn vriendengroep. De serie is gedeeltelijk gebaseerd op het leven van Mark Wahlberg, toen zijn assistent hem vroeg of hij Mark en zijn vrienden mocht filmen voor een documentaire, bracht dit Wahlberg op een idee.

Na 8 seizoenen kwam er vorig jaar een einde aan Entourage, tot grote teleurstelling van  de miljoenen fans. De serie werd onder meer genomineerd voor maar liefst 14 Golden Globe Awards. Acteur Jeremy Piven, die Ari Gold speelt in de serie, won in 2008 de Golden Globe voor Best Supporting Actor.

Op het moment van schrijven luister ik voor de 443ste keer naar de allernieuwste single van één van de zeldzame soul parels die ons land rijk is en elke keer klinkt het beter, soulvoller, en indrukwekkender. Ik heb het over “I Think I Love You”, de nieuwste single van r&b soul zanger PHATT, afkomstig uit de 010 area. Ik volg hem al een hele tijd, eerst als achtergrondzanger, waarna hij met eigen materiaal onder andere de Rotterdamse WATT en de Amsterdamse Paradiso in furore bracht. Op 6 februari dropt hij zijn nieuwe EP genaamd #LOVELY, en “I Think I Love You” is nu al hier te downloaden voor you & yours.

Voor een kippenvel momentje zet je op 2:58 je volume extra hard, en dan hoor je uithalen waar menig zanger alleen maar van kan dromen. I love being back at my fashion office learning and creating. It’s so challenging and fun and I’m surrounded by amazing people. They say you only live once but every time I come to work I feel like I’m starting a second life. You guys might think I have some type of backing for my line but I don’t. I did the first fashion show out of my own pocket and used the money I made touring to follow my passion. I’ve been working at this for 8 years now. From the first offers to do urban clothing lines that I turned down…to begging Bape to do my line and never making any real headway…to having an office in LA that was shut down after the “MTV” moment along with my tour with (Lady) Gaga.

I moved to Japan for one month after that and designed every night in my room. I had this opportunity to intern at Fendi and was also offered a position at Versace which I could not take due to my contract with LV which was for 2 years. I moved to Rome after I left Japan and worked at Fendi for 4 months undercover. I was there to give ideas for the men’s collection. I snuck to Giuseppe Zanotti’s factory still under contract and learned to design womens shoes for 2 years before my first show in Paris. After doing the first LV collection I was sure I would get a second shot to create but was never given the opportunity.

I designed a sneaker called the (Air) Yeezy with Nike. I’m “allowed” to design 1 pair of sneakers every 2 years. I have more ideas…

Early 2011 I moved to Paris and opened a small design studio. The language barrier was quite difficult. I still don’t have a Paris VAT number to this day. I don’t know what a VAT is but every time I asked why we didn’t have fabrics they said it was because of the VAT. In Paris I met many great people in design including the master Azzedine Alaia. Azzedine even came by my studio one day  . This was the greatest feeling to stand in his presence in my embarrassingly small Paris studio in a courtyard opposite Collate.

I remember being 5 years old picking and my mother taking me with her shopping at the discount fur spots. She said I would always point to the most expensive furs, even as a child. LOL. There is something about making clothing that always brings me back to that point. For the first 16 or 17 years of my life the only thing I knew about women’s clothing was what my Mom would wear. I guess some critics would joke that I still don’t know anything. LOL. My Mom would wear blue jeans with a fur and an embellished “Cosby Show” sweater  to pick me up from school. The teachers said I couldn’t focus. I used to get kicked out of class for bringing dirty magazines and drawing Nike’s in 4th grade.

Being a celebrity has afforded me many opportunities but has also boxed me in creatively. I was just discussing becoming the creative director for the Jetson movie and someone on the call yelled out, “you should do a Jetsons tour!”

This just happened a few hours ago. I was very insulted of course because for anyone that’s seen the Watch the Throne Tour, Coachella, Glow in the Dark or Runaway know that I have real ideas.

I appreciate having the most nominations at the Grammy’s but I feel so conflicted by the fact that award shows sometimes are completely illogical. Good logic tells me “smile Kanye”, the world likes you again. “Red or blue pill?”…aaaaand Swallow. LOL. I wouldn’t have the prestige I have if it wasn’t partially for the Grammy’s validation and I honor that.

Hmmmmm, what to wear? Here I go again… Yeezy the trend setter or complete f*cking fashion victim…the verdict is still out. This is just a train of thought but I figure it’s better to read than trained thoughts.

What good is fame and prestige if you can’t use it to help people? I want to help by doing what I know how to do best…create.

I have started a new company and I’m so excited about the name…it’s got the best name ever…of all companies…of all time!!!

The name of the company is DONDA.

DONDA is a design company which will galvanize amazing thinkers and put them in a creative space to bounce there dreams and ideas. I used to blog all the time an fit was a way to get my opinion out. Dr Dre redesigned headphones and made more impact off of one product. I am assembling a team of architects, graphic designers, directors musicians, producers, A&Rs, writers, publicist, social media experts, app guys, managers, car designers, clothing designers, DJs, video game designers, publishers, tech guys, lawyers, bankers, nutritionists, doctors, scientists and teachers.

DONDA will be comprised of over 22 divisions with a goal to make products and experiences that people want and can afford. These ‘end year lists’ come in many different forms, and cover almost any cultural or creative output imaginable, from best movies to best literary works. For one month the entire web is hell-bent on educating the masses on what they should be reading, watching or listening to. And it usually results in quite an interesting, if not, very entertaining read.

In the past four years I’ve contributed to this tradition by making a yearly Top 100 list of my favorite songs. Each year I would write a series of ten blogs, in which I would discuss ten songs per blog (counting down from a hundred).

This year’s “Soundtrack of 2011” series represents a collection of songs that piqued my interest over the past eleven and a half months. The reason for their inclusion in this list can be attributed to a number of things namely, lyrical content, musicality and sentimental value.

The list will cover a wide range of musical genres, but at the end of the day its main focus is on black music. Hip hop, soul, jazz and R&B are all very well represented in this list.

20. “Kool On” (ft. Greg Porn & Truck North) – The Roots

See number 15 on my list.

For now I’ll leave you with an excerpt from a review I find to be very spot-on:

“Undun is based on a character, Redford Stephens, who is faced with the experiences, limitations, and mortality of the streets and drug life. An incredibly dark and even sometimes morbid album, it conveys Redford’s existence in life and death as predestined. And so he gives in to the life, seeming to have no choice: “Illegal activity controls/my black symphony/Orchestrated like it happened incidentally.”

undun is wrought with dark, regretful tones, but it is the lyrics (delivered effortlessly by Black Thought, Big K.R.I.T., Aaron Livingston, Dice Raw, P.O.R.N., Phonte, Truck North, and Bilal) that drive the emotion. The grand leitmotifs of Redmond’s story are woven carefully in the lyrics, so they become vivid when paired with the slow, somber neo-funk tones.

The Roots are known for crossover success and integrating a wide array of genres and influences into their art, and this album is no exception. What makes this album exceptional, however, is the way they have taken intense themes and topics, yet blended them delicately into an album that any music fan will find remarkable. 19. “Holocene” – Bon Iver

I’ll be honest here and say that this album didn’t do all that much for me. Now I’m not saying it was bad, because that definitely wasn’t the case. But for some reason I just wasn’t that drawn to this project. Even when I first listened to it I felt the uncontrollable urge to go for the ‘skip’ button. I found this to be a really beautiful, but also unimaginably heavy album. Making it not the easiest of listens. If in the right mood, this can be perfect. But, if poorly timed, this will not last long in your mp3 or CD player. At least that was the case for me.

“Holocene” is one of the few exceptions on this self-titled album that I could listen to no matter what mood I was in. A beautiful and amazing piece of work, you’ll get no argument from me there. But not for everyone.

18. “What You Need” – The Weeknd

This dude came out of nowhere and took over the whole R&B game with his more than excellent mixtape “House Of Balloons”. This record literally oozes sex, like Jodeci on crack. But unlike those acts this is a way more forward thinking affair. “House Of Balloons” might just be the smoothest and most polished piece of work I’ve heard all year. It avoids the dirty ‘bump-and-grind’ pitfall and opts to go the other route; a much more luxurious sound entirely.

The beats here feel very hypnotic and sensual, with a slightly dark undertone. But The Weeknd is more than just smoothed out production values. There’s a very enigmatic mystic surrounding his persona. One can see it in every aspect of his work, from the videos to the artwork. It’s stylistic and extremely well executed.

“What You Need” is what happens when the perfect beat meets the perfect vocal arrangement. It’s simply sublime. But that can almost be said of any other song on this gorgeous project. It’s filled with new age R&B for the young and horny, but all with a great deal of sophistication.

17. “Life’s A Bitch” (ft. Royce Da 5’9 & Stokley Williams) – Elzhi

Whoever came up with the idea of putting Elzhi and the 6 piece-ensemble Will Sessions in a recording studio together deserves a medal. Their marriage of hip-hop and jazz is one of the finest I’ve heard all year.

The instrumentals on “Elmatic” are not simply live renditions of already great beats; they are creative re-interpretations that really flesh out the already existing beat. A remember seeing a video of DJ Premier not so long ago. He was given the Will Sessions instrumentals to listen to, and the expression on his face was that of a proud parent. I love that!

“Life’s A Bitch” was one of my all-time favorites growing up, and it still is. This version really took me by surprise, especially that R&B ending with Stokley Williams. Everything was perfect on this track, from Royce’s verse to that elegant outro. The best reworking of a classic I have ever heard.

16. “All Along The River” – Oddisee

Listening to Oddisee’s Rock Creek Park you’d never guess it was created in only ten short days. Oddisee, a talented producer but an even more gifted musician, gave us one of the deepest and most thoughtful recordings of the past 12 months.

Made up of great live instrumentation and sheer inventiveness, Oddisee decided to let the loop machine take a backseat this time around. And to great effect, I might add. Oddisee’s productions are some of the fullest and richest to have ever come out of the hip-hop corner. It’s almost as if his productions have an orchestral quality to them.

While others struggle to master their beatmachines, Oddisee has proven himself an authority on anything that can make sound. “Rock Creek Park” is one of my favorite albums of the year, with “All Along The River” as its definitive highlight.

15. “Sleep” – The Roots

The Roots can do no wrong in my book. Every single member in the Roots band is a highly gifted musician. That small fact gives their sound a richness that no amount of money can buy. I’d even go so far as to say that this band might just be the best in the world, and I don’t mean just in hip-hop.

The other thing that makes ?uestlove and his boys stand out is their constant drive to explore new avenues. They’re always looking for new ways to evolve and re-invent their sound. Each album/project is different from the one that preceded it.

And with “Undun” the boys have chosen to tackle the always tricky format of a concept album. To say The Roots crew succeeded, would be an understatement. They delivered probably the finest hip-hop record of 2011. “Undun” is a filler-free musical experience that will have you raping that repeat button until your fingers bleed.

Sleep is currently my favorite track, but almost every song on here is playing in the same league.

14. “Survive It” – Ghostpoet

Creative, though provoking, poetic, melodic, razor-sharp, intelligent, engaging, original, introspective, versatile, and most of all exciting, those are just a small selection of the words that come to mind when thinking about Obaro Ejimiwe (aka Ghostpoet) and his contribution to the musical landscape of 2011.

His album “Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam” was amazing. In many ways it reminded me of a young Roots Manuva. The similarities are obvious, and need no explanation. “Survive it” was one of those jams that stick to you. I played it almost continuously for the first few days after receiving this album. But even long after the album had come out I’d here a single melody line somewhere, and voila it would be stuck in my head again. Not a bad thing at all.

13. “The Day” – Pete Philly

My expectations for Pete Philly’s solo debut were very high. This was mostly due to the excellent “Open Loops” project, where we saw Pete working with a whole new list of partners, producers and other creative talent in order to release a string of songs through the internet. The “Open Loops” experiment was mostly a hip-hop affair, and delivered quite a few gems. His debut is a different kind of animal. First of it’s not really a hip-hop record per se. If you had to put it in a box, I’d say that box would be labelled soul.

First off, spitting rhymes has taken a backseat on “One”. Pete Philly has chosen to showcase his singing voice, and the result is a beautifully constructed record with a very warm and personal core. I admire artists that dare to take risks. And that is exactly what Pete did here.

“The Day” is my personal favorite. It’s one of those songs that makes you want to sing along to every line, hook and bridge. A beauty!

12. “HiiiPower” (Produced by J. Cole) – Kendrick Lamar

Breakthrough emcee of the year, no doubt. Kendrick Lamar went from relative obscurity to underground adoration. And rightfully so! Section 80 was flawed in my eyes, but it did succeed very well in one aspect:  showcasing the immense talent of this young black male.

His lyricism truly is refreshing. Take almost any song off of Section 80 and you will find proof of that. Where I thought this project could’ve done better was the production. But that’s just me. Songs like “Rigormortis” and “HiiiPower” were good examples of dynamic and fitting musical backdrops. But that can’t be said for everything on Section 80.

Therefore, I still believe Kendrick Lamar has yet to reach his full potential. And I’ll be following his career closely until he does. Because when he does finally discover the right sound to match his voice, it’ll be something extraordinary.

11. “Look What You’ve Done” – Drake

I’ve already said all I wanted to say about Drake and his stellar sophomore release “Take Care”. Some cats will dismiss it as merely soft R&B shit, but you would be wrong. This album is filled with unexpected depth and unrelenting emotion; of which “Look What You’ve Done” is the prime example. If this song doesn’t speak to you on a personal level or if you simply fail to see the honesty portrayed here, well son, then I can’t help you because you must be dead inside.

Het album heeft Habits & Contradictions en zal 14 januari worden uitgebracht onder het nieuwe vlaggenschip voor underground hip-hop. Het eerste voorproefje Blessed, waar ook de getalenteerde Kendrick Lamar op te horen is, klinkt in ieder geval zeer dope.

De eerste single afkomstig van het project kreeg onlangs visuele ondersteuning in de vorm van een elegante en vooral stylistische zwart/wit videoclip.  R&B heeft in 2011 grote stappen voorwaarts gemaakt en deze trend kent nu nog een vertegenwoordiger. Zijn naam? Jack Freeman!

30. “Stayin’ Busy” – Silent Knight

This is a school example of how to get the most mileage out of a sample. Feist’s “Limit To Your Love” gets a really elegant reworking for Silent Knight’s “Stayin’ Busy”. I admit that I was sceptical at first; especially considering James Blake already delivered the best possible cover imaginable. But after hearing it several times, the beat grew on me. Until eventually I couldn’t get enough of it.

As far as mic presence goes, Silent Knight outdid himself on this project. He makes his rhymes very easily accessible by sticking to what he knows best. The content combined with his delivery make for a very pleasant listen. While the rest of Silent Knight’s album “Busy Is My Best Friend” is quite noteworthy, this track (Stayin’ Busy) still remains my favorite.

29. “Street” – Jamie Woon

Let me start of by saying that Jamie Woon is one of the nicest, most articulate artists I have ever had the pleasure of interviewing. He’s a mix between a singer/songwriter and an R&B artist. And I quite like the combination. But that’s not all; he’s also a producer with dubstep and uk garage tendencies, making his projects something of a hybrid for various genres and styles.

His debut album “MirrorWriting” is a great piece of smoothed out, very atmospheric R&B. The beats are very spaciously constructed, leaving a lot of room for silence and calmth. While his voice is very soothing; it almost has an angelic quality.

I had a lot of favorites on the album, so choosing just one was kind of a dilemma. “Street” is probably the song I’ve listened to the most on this project. The lyrics are very simple, but they also ring very true. I’m looking forward to hearing more of this dude in the near future.

28. “Can’t Hold Us” (ft. Ray Dalton) – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

I’ve been a fan of Macklemore for quite some time now. He’s a very gifted rapper that knows how to combine enjoyable hip-hop with a message. I had two tracks of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis in mind when I started compiling this list.

The first one was “Wings”, which is a very serious and emotional song about loss and how pointless/random it can be at times. The other song is “Can’t Hold Us”, which is a totally different kind of jam. It’s basically a party anthem with a highly infectious beat and one of the best discoveries of my year, namely Ray Dalton. Damn, that cat can sing! I mean fuck John Legend, Ray Dalton is where it’s at. I’m hoping he gets signed quick, because I’m really looking forward to hearing more of that beautiful voice.

As you can see my preference went out to the latter. The main reason being that it’s just so damned cheerful and joyous.

27. “BTSTU” – Jai Paul

A sick fucking tune, this is. Drake used this for his song “Dreams Money Can Buy”, and to be quite honest that’s also where I first heard it. I really enjoyed “Dreams Money Can Buy”, but it’s the beat that really did it for me. Soon thereafter I found out who the creator was, and I’ve been infatuated with this beat ever since.

26. “If I Had You” (ft. D.R.U.G.S. & Thundercat) – TiRon & Ayomari

This album is so good; I had to make an exception and add a second song off it to my list. As a matter of fact this album is one of the few albums I actually paid for this year (I get sent most albums for free / reviewing purposes), simply because I wanted to show my support for these two cats right here. I’m also going to add a link for anyone who wants to do the same.

The reason I chose this as my second TiRon & Ayomari entry is because the production on this song is crisp. From the elegant drums that add to the musicality without overwhelming the rest, to the beautiful horns that come in later during the track.

“If I Had You” feels full of live instrumentation, making it a very rich production. Not to mention the fantastically delivered lines by TiRon & Ayomari. Great song!

25. “Backpacker’s Sermon from Mount Jansport” – Milo

I have to thank Anthony Fantano over at The Needle Drop for this one. Right up to watching Anthony’s review I had never even heard of this dude. But considering the praise he got from Anthony I decided to check him out. And boy, am I glad I did. This is one of the best kept secrets of 2011. Milo’s mixtape/album “I Wish My Brother Rob Was Here” is a beautifully personal, introspective and honest album with very smooth and laidback productions.

Not only are the productions good (bordering on great), but Milo can also rhyme. And I mean really, really rhyme. There’s an absence of something that makes his lyrics and therefore his songs feel real fresh. The thing absent is ego, and by leaving that one character trait out of the recording studio Milo has managed to accomplish something quite astounding. I chose “Backpacker’s Sermon from Mount Jansport” as my favorite on this project, but this holds many more great songs. I highly recommend you download the entire album.

Sidenote: This is the second song in my top 100 where the movie Good Will Hunting is referenced. Always a good thing!

24. “I’ll Take Care Of You” – Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie XX

It’s strange to have both the original and the cover (by Drake, which is probably also the more popular of the two) be released in the same year. Drake’s cover was a good attempt that would have been so much better if Rihanna weren’t on the track. But it doesn’t even come close to Gil Scott-Heron’s original. I do appreciate that Drake covered this song. In doing so he has turned a lot of new listeners (especially the younger crowd) onto Gil Scott-Heron and also Jamie XX (especially the younger crowd). That in itself is worthy of a compliment.

I have always loved Gil Scott-Heron’s poetry. And the partnership with Jamie XX provided a nice little modern-day twist to his writing. Gil’s voice is still the thing that does it for me. It’s filled with such life and character. I can’t help but be sad that he’s no longer with us. But his legacy remains.

23. “Detroit State Of Mind” (Produced by Will Sessions) – Elzhi

Elzhi is one of the best emcees working today. And when he announced that he was doing a re-interpretation of Nas’s classic “Illmatic” I knew instantly that it would be one hell of a record. But credit doesn’t solely belong to Elzhi, because the Will Sessions band deserves every bit of recognition for this stunning record.

“The remarkable thing about the Will Sessions backing is that it extenuates certain elements to prominence; deepening the jazz and soul cues that carried Illmatic’s sonic components – ‘The World Is Yours’ extends out with a quivering jazz piano solo recognising Pete Rock’s debt to Ahmad Jamal’s ‘I Love Music’ on the original. And the Michael Jackson ‘Human Nature’ lift on ‘It Ain’t Hard To Tell’ seems more in the limelight on El’s version. It’s exciting to hear these cuts handled in a slightly rougher manner yet preserving the spirit of Illmatic.

El is no slouch on the mic of course; being one of the more accomplished MCs of the mid-west. He turns ‘One Love’’s narrative on its head; eschewing the three imprisoned subjects for a lusty love letter to a mysterious girl – check ridiculous internal rhymes like “That was like three years strong it wasn’t long / before I stripped her thong gave her the schlong and wrote this song” You can’t help but smirk on the intro to ‘Halftime’: “It’s Elzhi in ya area / Bout to backslap and bury ya” a cheeky alteration to “bout to cause mass hysteria” or the mention to the late Jay Dee via ‘World Is Your’s’ obligatory nods to fallen friends: ‘To my man J Dilla god bless ya life”.

Precious hip hop purists may take it as eLZhi trying to outdo Nas but listening to this record you realise its just as much a worthy homage as it is a solid hip hop record that stands up on its own.” – (excerpt from thecorner.co.nz)

22. “Over My Dead Body” – Drake

I’m not even going to lie; Drake’s sophomore album Take Care is a great listen. It’s not perfect, but then again it doesn’t need to be. What Drake has done here is quite enough to convince even the most headstrong hater to re-evaluate their assumptions. Many critics often (especially the hard-core hip-hop heads) will try to label Drake as non hip-hop. But more of a R&B hybrid. I strongly disagree.

This definitely falls under the hip-hop moniker. Drake just uses a slightly different approach to tell his story. And that is exactly where this album really shines; it gives you an idea of who Drake is. His emotions, his insecurities, his fears, all of the fragments that make up his character are presented on Take Care (and in brutally honest fashion).

“Over My Dead Body” is one of the strongest album openers I’ve seen all year. Right off the bat Drake hits you with a song that feels like a mirror for the rest of the album. No build-up, no intros, just heartfelt lyrics presented against a minimalist beat with melodic harmonies. Love it!

21. “Another Naive Individual Glorifying Greed and Encouraging Racism” – Big K.R.I.T.

It’s amazing how good mixtapes have become over the past couple of years. I almost find it insulting to call these projects by that name. It’s seems to me that considering the level of artistry these projects deserve more. They feel and sound like full-fledged albums so why not call them that. Big K.R.I.T. Return of 4eva wasn’t the only project deserving of more than merely a ‘mixtape’ label. Others include Elzhi’s Elmatic and the Freddie Gibbs joint “Cold Day in Hell”.

This isn’t the only song off of Big K.R.I.T. project that made the cut. My favorite joint off that project is still to come. Therefore I won’t elaborate any further, but instead I’ll leave you with a very on-point review.

“Rarely does vision become realized as panoramically as this. “This” being an internet mixtape that plays like an album, the internet mixtape as potential made tangible, its structure adorned with all the byzantine detail outlined in the blueprint. Fittingly, a remix of “Country Shit”—one of the standout tracks on K.R.I.T.’s last terrific release—unfurls its liquid Godzilla tail and Ludacris drops his obligatory Best Guest Verse of the Year before 4eva recedes into silence. It’s the victorious burst of pyrotechnics after the suite of somber numbers that compose the album’s delicate dénouement. And it feels correct because a triumph so immense should conclude, logically, with a grin wider and more resplendent than any Chevy’s grill.” – (excerpt from cokemachineglow.com)

40. “It’s All Real” – Gerald Walker

Gerald Walker is someone I hope to hear a lot from in the upcoming years. He’s been on the grind for some time now; releasing several high-quality mixtapes and a ton of great tracks. His “The Other Half Of Letting Go” project proved once more that the combination of R&B vocals and hip-hop beats could lead to some stunning results. The fact that Gerald Walker can out sing Drake any day of the week also doesn’t hurt.

“It’s All Real” was by far my favorite track on this project. It reminded me of those old laidback G-funk cuts by dudes like Warren G. Not that this is exactly like that, but the groundwork is the same. Another thing that comes to mind when listening to this song is the resemblance with some of the more mellow cuts by hip-hop outfit Bone Thugs and Harmony. What I want to say here is that this song brings back a lot of memories and feelings, and therefore is very deserving of a place in my list.

39. “Last Day of School” (Produced by Oddisee) – Has-Lo

This is Has-Lo’s second entry in my list. The first one was “Kinetic Energy” off his “In Case I Don’t Make It” album, while this track can be found on the excellent “Conversation B” (which was released not that long ago). Both projects really impressed me, but the thing that really made “Conversation B” stick out was its rooster of big name producers. The album consists of 14 tracks, each produced by one of hip-hop’s best. Some of the names include Exile, Kev Brown, Eric Lau, Paten Locke, and of course Oddisee.

On “Last Day of School” Oddisee provides Has-Lo with a dreamy backdrop for an impressive display of honest lyricism. This track immediately made me hit the repeat button on my Ipod. There’s something about unpretentious rap that always strikes a nerve with me. So much of today’s hip-hop is only concerned with bragging, posing or making yourself come across like a blabbering idiot. So it’s refreshing to finally find someone who just says what’s on his mind. No ego, just (random) thoughts against a musical background.

38. “Dreamers” (ft. Mai Khalil) – Lowkey

Lowkey was another great surprise this year. I’ve heard him on several guest spots before, but never on something completely his own. His “Soundtrack to the Struggle” gives the listener an in-depth look at Lowkey’s view of the world. This young UK resident launches a lyrical attack that goes on for almost 80 minutes. Nothing is left unsaid; addressing social, political or corporate issues with a fire that hasn’t been seen since the days of Public Enemy. The album can feel very heavy at times, but there’s also something to be said for an artist that chooses not to hold his tongue, and simply let it all out.

Within the “Soundtrack to the Struggle” one will find various gems. The use of snippets of newsreels, speeches by public figures, and other great material is a stroke of genius. It often adds a historical perspective; showing that we, as a society, actually haven’t come that far.

“Dreamers” is one of the more introspective songs on the album. A track dedicated to the dreamers or as Lowkey himself puts it: “not the people that “see things that are there and ask why”, but the people that “see things that aren’t there and ask why not”.

37. “Menace II Society” (ft. Dom Kennedy & Polyester)

Not since the nineties have I heard a track so successfully replicate that great West-Coast G-Funk sound as Freddie does here, on “Menace II Society”. Not only is the production great, but Freddie’s flow is impeccable as well. I love his voice! He has one of those voices that is just instantly recognizable. And not only that, but Freddie can actually spit. Last year he grabbed my attention with his “Str8 Killa” EP. Now he’s not only got my attention. He’s made me a fan!

His new mixtape “Cold Day In Hell” (and I use the word ‘mixtape’ lightly, because this project is put together so fitting that you might as well call it an album) is phenomenal. I remember spending a whole day walking/shopping in Amsterdam, while bumping this record through my headphones. And it was the perfect soundtrack to my day, to any day actually. I’m hoping to see Freddie perform somewhere in the near future. Because with his sound and his swagger I’m betting his live shows are AWESOME.

36. “Somebody I Used To Know” (ft. Kimbra) – Gotye

Everybody and their grandma liked this song in 2011. Seriously, from the hard-core rockers to the gangsta rappers, everybody was diggin’ this joint. And who can blame ‘m. It’s a beautiful song. Although I did get a bit sick of it there at the end! When it was almost like the song was being played in a loop; over and over again.

While I really enjoyed “Making Mirrors”, I still actually prefer his previous album “Like Drawing Blood”. Somehow I felt that album was way more daring in its genre-hopping and bending.

The thing that made “Somebody I Used To Know” really stand out was the fact that it describes a situation that almost everybody on this planet goes through. Don’t know who wrote the song, but that person deserves a whole lot of praise, because the song writing is perfection. Add to that the beautiful vocals by Gotye and Kimbra, and you have an amazing song.

35. “Another Girl” – Jacques Greene

I never listen to the radio. Like never! Too much shit on there. While driving home from a late night concert (somewhere during the end of summer) I got kind of bored with the music selection in my car. I accidentally put on the radio and this song was on.  I immediately fell in love with it, did a quick Google search, found it, downloaded it, and have been listening to it ever since. The fact that I discovered this song through the radio does nothing for my views on public radio. They still play shit. As a matter of fact, this song was followed by an entire half hour of that bouncy soulless techno music. Not my cup of tea.

I love the dubstep elements in this song. A really wicked tune, from start to finish!

34. “Better Than” – Gretchen Parlato

This lady has impressed me a great deal. She’s got this hauntingly beautiful voice that is like the perfect instrument for channelling or conveying emotions. Somehow she always manages to find hidden depths in any song she sings. Her exquisite timing and sensual delivery make for the most surprising reinterpretations of already great songs.

Her “Lost and Found” album didn’t get a lot a repeat business from me, but only because it’s really mellow and soothing. And personally I wasn’t in that place all that much this year. My life seemed to be on fast-forward mode in 2011. “Better Than” was the only track that kept me coming back for more of that easy listening jazz.

33. “Same Folks” (ft. Fashawn) – Evidence

This I will never understand! How in god’s name is this track not on Evidence’s Cats & Dogs album. Who the fuck raised his hand in that meeting and said: “It’s a good intro, and the video is nice. But let’s leave this song on the cutting room floor, shall we?” For me “Same Folks” was one of the main reasons for buying the Evidence album.

Imagine me coming home, putting on the cd, playing it from start to finish, and then scratching my head: “Uhhhh, did I miss something? Where’s the first single gone to?” I mean that shit was infuriating. Don’t get me wrong, the album was great. But I still feel that Evidence should have at least put “Same Folks” on there. If only as a bonus cut!

32. “That Power” – Childish Gambino

Let me start by saying that Pitchfork got it wrong. They give Childish Gambino’s debut album Camp a 1.6 rating, which was misguided (and bordering on idiotic) on their part. Sure there are a lot of things to critique. But in the end, there’s also a lot of stuff to love on Camp. And that goes double for the artist. Pitchfork has always had a hard-on for hipsters, and Childish is definitely not a hipster. So maybe it’s just that they can’t understand where he’s coming from. Who knows?

For me, the material released by Childish over the past 12 months has been mesmerising. I especially love “Culdesac” and the EP. I think he’s got the same sensibility Drake has in his work, only Childish doesn’t channel it through girly emotions. He often mixes it with some of the same aggression Tyler The Creator has in his music. But Childish goes about it in a more mature way. “That Power” is probably my favorite song on the Camp album. The outro is a thing of beauty. And that ‘Truffaut’ line is just perfect.

31. “Rigamortis” – Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar has two entries in my list. This is the first. Instead of explaining myself twice I decided to not further elaborate why this is such an amazing artist. I’ll do that later on when we get to the other track. For now I’ll leave you with an excerpt from the onethirtybpm.com review, which pretty much says it all.

“Section.80 nearly seems to live and breathe. It’s a political record and a personal record, a movement record – with good reason: Lamar is gaining power, and he’s getting on his Peter Parker. All in all, Section.80 is perhaps best described simply as a mission statement. Lamar made a bold and brilliant choice by placing the ever-hyped “Hiii Power” last. Even after its months of availability, the track still thunders, and all one can do is wait for what he does next. A buzz builder doesn’t come much better constructed. It’s said that Lamar’s goal here was to prove himself capable of standing alone. Well, in certainly one of the greatest critical understatements written, he’s done it. Amidst the decay of this new generation of MC’s, a bit healing goes a long, long way. Has a generation found its voice? These ‘end year lists’ come in many different forms, and cover almost any cultural or creative output imaginable, from best movies to best literary works. For one month the entire web is hell-bent on educating the masses on what they should be reading, watching or listening to. And it usually results in quite an interesting, if not, very entertaining read.

In the past four years I’ve contributed to this tradition by making a yearly Top 100 list of my favorite songs. Each year I would write a series of ten blogs, in which I would discuss ten songs per blog (counting down from a hundred).

This year’s “Soundtrack of 2011” series represents a collection of songs that piqued my interest over the past eleven and a half months. The reason for their inclusion in this list can be attributed to a number of things namely, lyrical content, musicality and sentimental value.

The list will cover a wide range of musical genres, but at the end of the day its main focus is on black music. Hip hop, soul, jazz and R&B are all very well represented in this list.

So, without any further ado……let the countdown commence!

50. “Write On” (ft. Imani Bilal & King Tut) – yU

With his sophomore solo release Washington emcee yU opted for a slightly different production sound. That old skool Boom Bap sound provided by Oddisee on their group effort Diamond District has been traded in for a jazzier counterpart. And given yU’s voice, flow and subject matter, I’d say the match is quit fitting.

Anyone familiar with his solo project “Before Taxes” will instantly know that this dude is one seriously talented cat. And with “The Earn” he delivers yet again. This record is very down-to-earth. yU talks about the things that matter to him; “The Earn” is basically what you get when you take rap music and strip it of all its macho bullshit. Nothing but ‘real talk’ and dope beats.

“Write On” is one of my favorite cuts on the album. I especially love the spoken word segment in the middle. Delivering pearls of wisdom like: “Art will always remain a remedy for pain”.

49. “Dust” – Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean blew up in 2011. From relatively unknown R&B singer (associated with the Oddfuture crew) to full-fledged stardom, Frank did his thing this past year. Like I said earlier, there are two artists who really revived R&B for me this year; one is The Weeknd, and the other is Frank Ocean. The Weeknd did me in with his smooth and sonically rich sound, while Frank Ocean really pulled me in with his uncensored lyrics.

My favorite track off “Nostalgia, Ultra” wasn’t one of the more known tracks like “Novacane” or “Swim Good”. Instead it was “Dust”, probably the softest song on the record. I love the metaphor Frank uses here. But even more than the song writing, I really love how Frank manages to pour his heart onto the track. Now I’m not saying the rest of “Nostalgia, Ultra” isn’t like that, but here he actually got to me. Great song!

48. “The Mirror” – Pac Div

Pac Div had a great year. First off, there was the Mania! mixtape which had some excellent tracks. And several months later the this hip-hop group finally got around to releasing their long awaited debut album The Div (not Grown Man Syndrome, which was supposed to be the initial title). I liked both projects, but I can’t help but feel that they could’ve been better (especially where The Div is concerned).

“The Mirror” was featured on the Mania! mixtape (as a matter of fact it was the opener, and what a great way to start). The first minute or so of “The Mirror” is all intro (mostly piano keys), but once those strings start in you’ll find your head uncontrollably nodding along to the song’s heartbeat. The trio’s macho swag has remained intact throughout their career, although it’s presented in a more mature form here. Very cool to see they’ve got more to offer then just attitude and style.

47. “My Sunshine” (ft. Nia Andrews) – Blu

My man Blu is the shit! People who still aren’t convinced of this man’s potential (he could be one of the best rappers of this generation, in my opinion) simply don’t know anything about hip-hop. Blu made a big splash this year, releasing a new project every couple of months. From the unexpected Exile collabo to his major label debut NO YORK. His lyricism is something to marvel at. He’s got this really complicated rhyme scheme, which he can alter to fit any production style. It’s uncanny! Also he always gives his words a deeper meaning or subtext, making the songs much more meaningful and raw.

“My Sunshine” was the first single off his major label debut. Right off the bat, you knew this project wasn’t going be your ordinary hip-hop album. And as it turns out, it wasn’t. Taking a risk Blu opted to go the creative route with his big debut. And I admire him all the more for it. Instead of choosing easy marketable beats that cater to a big crowd, he chose to simply make an album he himself would like to hear. With back-up from several of today’s hottest hip-hop producers he created something very unique.

Unfortunately it didn’t get the recognition it deserved, but maybe time will correct that mistake by slowly making people realise that this masterpiece was simply ahead of its time.

46. “Run Shit” (ft. Marv Won) – Paul White

I’ve been following Paul White’s career for quite a while now. And to be honest I wasn’t all that enthusiastic. Until I heard his hip-hop project “Rapping With Paul White” that is! An unexpected surprise would be an accurate description of that album. The production sound of that record is really something. It’s a mixed bag of various styles, mostly heavy drum patterns. It feels very organic, which is nice (especially in a world that has been overrun by computer-generated beats and sympathizers).

I love the Eastern sample used in “Run Shit”. But the real star here is Marv Won. He effectively glides over the beat. He’s funny, articulate and delivers every line with great timing. I’m curious to see what things he has in store for us.

45. “Eatfish” (ft. Blu) – Gonjasufi

“Be rich, eat fish and die” – that basically sums up the advice Gonjasufi has for us in this song. The production on “Eatfish” has a similar murky and unmixed quality as that of one of Blu’s lo-fi projects. It works very well for this song and in particular for an artist like Gonjasufi. Although “Eatfish” is officially a Gonjasufi track I consider it to be more of a vehicle for Blu. Gonjasufi’s contribution to “Eatfish” comes in the form of a somewhat muted hook and some adlibs, all working very well with the lo-fi production. But it’s Blu’s amazing lyricism that sticks out.

I tried to find the lyrics to this song online, but unfortunately I turned up empty-handed. No worries though, simply listen to the audio and tell me those aren’t some of the most venomous bars you’ve heard all year.

44. “Evolve” – Pharoahe Monch

I really want to say that I loved Pharoahe Monch’s latest, but I can’t. I remember being very taken away by the release during the first couple of days after its arrival on the web. But the more I listened to it, the more I felt something was missing. “W.A.R.” is nowhere near the level of perfection displayed on “Desire”. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad record. Definitely not! Maybe I was just expecting too much.

“W.A.R.” had some very good moments, and one of its best was “Evolve”. But overall I find myself going back to that album less and less as time passes on.

43. “Murder To Excellence” – Jay-Z & Kanye West

This was probably the biggest disappointment of the year, if you ask me. Two powerhouses on one record and all they could come up with was this? Really? The production wasn’t the problem for me. I thought most of the beats were very fitting. The biggest beef I have regarding this record is with the lack of lyricism. Here we have one of the greatest rappers of all time, Jay-Z, together with one of the best hip-hop producers of the past decade.

That combo right there should be enough for at least a stellar album filled with a small fortune of quotable lines and captivating instrumentals. Especially considering one of the two people involved just came off of his most ambitious project to date “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”. But something this sweet just wasn’t meant to be. Jay-Z sounds like he’s asleep on almost all of the tracks. While Kanye once again let’s his ego get away from him. There are some songs on here that I really liked, for example the opener “No Church In The Wild”. But the majority simply lacked the intelligence or the charisma of say an album like “The Blueprint”.

“Murder To Excellence” is the best cut on “Watch The Throne”; featuring a great beat by producer S1, and finally some quality lines by the two giants.

42. “Everybody, Nobody, Somebody” – Random Axe

Eargasm!!! Those drums can only mean one thing: Black Milk. This right here is the club joint; the track you play at full volume any and every time you put it on. The hard beats on this album made me a fan from the get-go. And having seen this trio live on stage I can tell you that the songs on this project translate very well onto a busy stage with a whole lot of people standing in front of it.

“Coming in at barely over 40 minutes, Random Axe is sure to leave listeners wanting more. But with no skippable tracks and Black Milk’s knack for extracting the best performances out of people, Random Axe is far from an unsatisfying experience. For all their lyrical posturing, the three rappers leave their creative egos at the door, drawing out each other’s strengths and filling in for their weaknesses to create an album that is worthy of the collective clout of the names on the cover” – (excerpt from kevinnottingham.com)

41. “Recollections Of The Wraith” – Shabazz Palaces

One of the best hip-hop albums of 2011! Period! I read the potholesinmyblog review and had to get this right away. The review praised that album in a way that made me want to hear the entire record from start to finish even before I finished the first paragraph. So instead of writing down my own thoughts on this album, I thought I’d post some excerpts from that very effective review by Craig Jenkins over at potholesinmyblog.com.

“I’m gonna start off by saying some shit you normally have to wait til the end of a review to hear: Black Up is the album of the year. Hands the fuck down. If you didn’t even read anything else I’ve written here, if you just closed this tab and got yourself a copy, I wouldn’t even be mad at you. My job here would be done. I’d be standing on the aircraft carrier underneath the “Mission Accomplished” banner.”

“The beats are crazy. No easy outs. No standard issue boom bap, no crutch-like reliance on classic breaks. Just a wealth of tiny interlocking parts assembling to form inventive and meticulously constructed grooves.”

“There’s a kind of bravery, though, in turning in a 36-minute rap album in 2011 and not lessening the perceived impact of the thing by calling it an EP, like it’s something tossed off. There isn’t a single artist working today who couldn’t benefit from this kind of brevity. It gives the whole affair a latent sense of… urgency. The album ends and I instantly need to put it back on again. And I can do that because no track overstays its welcome here.”

60. “Zij” – Wudstik

This is the very first song in the Dutch language to ever make it on my list. I’m serious! Wudstik’s second solo album was a risky undertaking, seeing as most people know him as a rapper. For “Vind” (the album’s title, which means ‘to find’) however, he decided to explore his singing ability. And my god can this man sing! Taking notes from various American R&B/Soul singers Wudstik has crafted a very elegant, meaningful and smooth R&B record.

The thing that struck me the most about this project is the level of maturity in the writing. Unlike most R&B albums, this has a sense of honesty about it. All the fronting and posing that is usually associated with this type of sound is gone. What remains is a beautifully sincere and heartfelt record filled with love songs.

59. “Beautiful Fight” – Kenton Dunson

This tune is catchy as fuck! I must have spent weeks on end with that beat stuck in my head. Someone sent me Kenton Dunson’s ep during the summer. Having no clue who this cat was, I let the ep rest comfortably in my mailbox. It wasn’t until I heard the song through a 2dopeboyz stream that I went back and downloaded it for myself. While I didn’t really like the ep that much, this song made me go back to it repeatedly.

Contributing to the infectious beat (with its funky car sounds and bouncy drums) is the equally catchy hook, which you will find yourself uncontrollably singing along to. After only a single listen.

Hook:

“So I said when the bell starts ringing
If I get knocked down I will stand up swinging
And all of a sudden it just came together
I will fight for a minute so you remember my name forever
Whenever I get there I hope the sight is beautiful
So I can sit back and say this fight was beautiful”

58. “She Said Its OK” – Blu & Exile

And out of nowhere Blu & Exile release a follow-up to their modern classic Below The Heavens. The new album “Give Me Flowers While I Can Smell Them” is a 15-track LP that was recorded back in 2009.  And as expected, they deliver the goods on this record as well. But buyers should be aware that this is an ‘unfinished’ product. The mastering and mixing has yet to be completed. But even then this is worth every penny.

Exile is a beast on the board. Just like on “Below The Heavens”, he provides a beautiful soulful backdrop with lots of flipped samples. When listening to “Flowers” you’ll immediately hear a kinship with their first album “Below The Heavens”. Blu’s trademark combo of detailed storytelling and intricate wordplay is another reason why you should definitely check this project. “She Said Its OK” is one of my favorite cuts on the new release.

57. “Rise and Shine” – J. Cole

I was really looking forward to J. Cole’s debut “Cole World: The Sideline Story”. Honestly, I really was. But for some reason I just wasn’t feeling this project. For me, his debut doesn’t reflect his full potential. It’s inconsistent and at lacks focus. Not all the time, but a lot of the tracks just felt ‘light’ to me. I enjoyed his previous mixtapes a whole lot more. But even thou I was let down by this release, there are still enough glimpses of greatness to make me believe that J. Cole will eventually deliver a ‘classic’ someday.

My favorite tracks on “Cole World” are this and the heartfelt “Breakdown”. When making this list I always try to limit myself to one (and in some cases two) song(s) per album.

Therefore I had a really hard time choosing between these two great songs. I eventually picked “Rise and Shine”. The main reason being: Cole’s rapid flow and compelling wordplay.

56. “Shake It Out” (The Weeknd Remix) – Florence and The Machine

Depending on your opinion towards Canadian R&B sensation The Weeknd, you’ll either hate of love the remix. As you can see, I fall into the latter category. This slick, downbeat version, in which Florence Welch’s voice is presented through several filters, is much darker than the original. But still manages to exude a sense of sensuality and/or sexiness. The Weeknd transformed the original into a moody piece with layered vocals and raw emotions.

People who fell in love with the original probably won’t like it. But if you judge this remix on its own merits you’ll find that it’s actually a sublime piece of work. It’s also the only remix that made it onto my top 100 list. And that’s saying something.

55. “Postcard” – David Dallas

The Rose Tint by David Dallas is one of my favorite albums of 2011. I must have played that record to death over the past several months. I love how Dallas mixed a certain pop sensibility into his songs, without losing the balance. His accent, his flow, his skill, there’s all noteworthy. But the thing I like most about this project is the way this young rapper has found exactly which production-sound fits his persona.

There are so many great tracks on here. It was really hard trying to pick just one. Postcard is the winner for me. First off, any song sampling bits of dialogue from the motion picture Good Will Hunting is okay in my book. And second, I love the message and emotion instilled into the track.

54. “Seijun Suzuki” – Blue Scholars

OMG, that beat!!!! I wasn’t feeling the latest release by the Blue Scholars all that much. But this cut just wouldn’t let go of me. Every time I’d hear it my hand would uncontrollably go to the volume button. And that shit would get cranked up. That’s until the neighbors started complaining of course.

Sabzi did a great job production-wise. I’m still looking for an instrumental of this beat. So if anyone’s got it, please hit me up.

It’s a shame really that dj’s nowadays only play what is known. I would have loved to hear this track while out clubbing. But where dj’s used to bridge the gap between underground and commercial, now they just play whatever’s popular in the charts. Doesn’t matter thou, hip-hop has a large core fan-base. And tracks as mint as this one will always get airtime with them.

53. “Stars Shine Brightest” (In The Darkest Of Night) – Cunninlynguists

“Oneirology” was another favorite of mine this year. The Cunninlynguists made an album around the concept of dreams, and the end result is an ambitiously gripping and dreamy record that pulls you in and never lets you go. While some people needed to hear the record a couple of times, before they really started enjoying it. I was hooked the very first time I heard it.

“The album is a journey, taking on a new face with each listen. It plays like the collective unconsciousness of the group, dreaming through the night, the flame of the symbiosis finally fading to “Embers”. On the closing track, Kno explains the road we took through their world. “All my images are morgues and moons, and every fork in the road moves through Freud and Jung/In the darkness, no orchard blooms, a state so dark, sparks from torches consumed/It’s like I live in a fortress of doom, in the forest where the blood pours with force from my wounds/My body aches with this lobotomy, a part of me shakes/Open my eyes and awake.” Their dreams certainly seem haunted, but all the better for their music.” — (excerpt from the lifessweetbreath.com review)

“Stars Shine Brightest” is a great hook-driven song (Oneirology is filled with beauties like this). Absolutely love Kno’s production on this track. But that goes for almost any track on this album.

52. “Nasty” – Nas

The first time I heard “Nasty” I immediately jumped on twitter and posted how much this song reminded me of “Made You Look”. And it’s true, it still does! “Nasty” is classic Nas, and I don’t know anyone on this planet that isn’t down with an ol’ skool Nas. My hopes for the album are high; even thou I usually get disappointed (at least where his more recent releases are concerned).

The beat for “Nasty” is amazing. But no matter how great the production, it’s actually Nas and his high level of lyrical ability that made me listen to this like 20 times in a row. I once read an article where the writer argued that Nas wasn’t a really complicated rapper per se. His content, delivery and flow, have more of a philosophical swagger. I have to agree with that assessment. Dope-ass song!

“For the hustlers, thick as yellow bitches for the suck of it
Got a bunch of niggas in prison braggin’, sayin’ “It was Nas I used to hustle wit’”

51. “Motivation” – Clams Casino

Proof that some of the best music being offered today is actually free! Clams Casino’s Instrumental mixtape was distributed through Mediafire by the producer himself. Slowly but surely the mixtape found an audience. And from there his career sky-rocketed into orbit. But the productions on the Instrumental mixtape weren’t the only thing that got Clams Casino noticed this year. His contribution on stellar releases like the A$AP Rocky album also upped his profile. “Motivation” is probably my favorite cut on the mixtape. It’s really heavy and hazy, but that’s part of the charm.

“Clams Casino has trimmed the fat from hip-hop’s jiggling booty. The boom-bap of bass and snare provides the album’s spine, but its heart owes more to the glitch and hiss and ghostly vocals of Burial or Tri Angle stablemate, Balam Acab. But where Burial conjures rain and chill; here, soaring synths radiate a slow glow that seems to light these tracks from below.” – (excerpt from undertherader.co.nz)

eLZhi takes his audience back in time to the Mid-90’s, and into Maurice Malone’s Hip-Hop Shop. The Shop was the heart of the Detroit hip hop scene where many collaborated, battled and shared music. It was there that a young eLZhi first grabbed the microphone to prove that he had the ability to become one of the greatest rappers alive.

Music executive and artist manager Jae Barber, also a Detroit native, provided an authentic picture of the world elZhi revisits in his nostalgic spin on Nas’ classic song, “Memory Lane.” The video includes rare visuals of various artists such as Eminem and Royce Da 5′9″. Amongst the many artists included are the late Baatin, Proof and J Dilla.

These ‘end year lists’ come in many different forms, and cover almost any cultural or creative output imaginable, from best movies to best literary works. For one month the entire web is hell-bent on educating the masses on what they should be reading, watching or listening to. And it usually results in quite an interesting, if not, very entertaining read.

In the past four years I’ve contributed to this tradition by making a yearly Top 100 list of my favorite songs. Each year I would write a series of ten blogs, in which I would discuss ten songs per blog (counting down from a hundred).

This year’s “Soundtrack of 2011” series represents a collection of songs that piqued my interest over the past eleven and a half months. The reason for their inclusion in this list can be attributed to a number of things namely, lyrical content, musicality and sentimental value.

The list will cover a wide range of musical genres, but at the end of the day its main focus is on black music. Hip hop, soul, jazz and R&B are all very well represented in this list.

So, without any further ado……let the countdown commence!

70. “Løb Stop Stå” – Boom Clap Bachelors

I had heard of the Boom Clap Bachelors before, but for some reason I had never gotten around to listening to any of their stuff. Not until this song that is. Having accidentally stumbled onto the video for Løb Stop Stå, I was immediately impressed and wanted to know more. Strangely enough there wasn’t a whole lot to find. After quit the search, I finally found a site with various links to some of their stuff (including a link for this song).

Løb Stop Stå presents its listeners with silky smooth atmospherics and gorgeous vocals. As a matter of fact the entire The Mellem Dine Læber EP is that way. It’s the perfect soundtrack to any lazy afternoon sitting in the backyard (with a cup of tea and not much else). Another great thing about this song is de simple yet mesmerizing video accompanying it. Needless to say the Boom Clap Bachelors formed a big part of my summertime playlist.

69. “Get Em” – The Doppelgangaz

2011 was a good year for hip-hop! Let me say that again, it was a good year for hip-hop! Unlike previous years where you usually have a handful of standout releases, this year was characterized by having no real standouts (okay, maybe one or two). But instead we got a whole string of solid releases from newbie’s and old-timers. For me, The Doppelgangaz are one of the biggest surprises of 2011.

Their album “Lone Shark” is a great example of how you successfully take traditional 90’s jazz infused boom bap and then give it your own contemporary twist. The production on this album is filled with bits and pieces of brilliance, especially when it comes to the samples. “Get Em” is one of my favorite cuts on this small masterpiece. Highly recommended!

68. “Sun Come Up” (ft. Bootie Brown) – Moka Only

Moka Only is one of the most underrated producers in the game. Like I said last year, Canada is becoming quit the hip-hop nation; housing a growing number of unique producers, emcees and singer/songwriters.

The fifth edition of Moka’s “Airport” series is a collection of laidback and melodic beats that play well against a spring or summer backdrop. The number of guest appearances on here are limited when compared to previous releases. The beautiful arrangements are given all the necessary space to come alive. “Sun Come Up” is yet another infectiously melodic summertime anthems that has dominated the playtime in my car stereo.

67. “One Night” (ft. Terrace Martin, Phonte & Bird and The Midnight Falcons) – 9^th Wonder

Let me start off by saying I was extremely disappointed with The Wonder Years. Considering the names that were featured on this thing I at least expected to be memorable, but at the end of the day it just didn’t do anything for me. I believe 9^th is a great producer, but he’s seems to be stuck in a rut. I’m kind of getting the feeling his productions of late all sound the same. Still very soulful and well-made, just not challenging enough. Also, 9^th without Phonte is like cereal without the milk.

“One Night” was one of the few tracks where I actually found myself reaching for the repeat button. The production on this thing is just grade A throwback nostalgia; made complete by a killing sax and an on point Phonte. One a side note: My hopes for a Little Brother reunion remain high.

66. “Unfound” (ft. Homeboy Sandman) – Kooley High

This is a late entry. “Unfound” can be found (see what I did there?) on Kooley High’s new album “David Thompson”. This track immediately grabbed my attention and hasn’t let me go since. We’re basically talking about less than a month ago. Every day while driving to work this song gets at least two to three back-to-back plays. The subtle piano keys, Tab-one’s ridiculous flow and Homeboy Sandman’s intricate wordplay, all are superb.

I’m hoping Kooley High make it big one day. I’d love to see them get signed to a major label. Not because I want them to be more commercially appealing, because I really wouldn’t want them to change a thing about their style of group dynamic. It’s just that I’d like to see a lot more people get to enjoy the dopeness they put out.

65. “Brand New” – Rashad & Confidence

This was another great and unexpected surprise. A friend of mine put me onto them a couple of months back. “Brand New” was the first track I heard by this extremely gifted pair. Confidence’s crisp ol’ skool production was the thing that did it for me first, but then I started to listen more carefully to Rashad. And man, can that cat rhyme. Anyone not familiar with these dudes, please do yourself a favor and get acquainted.

I tried to pick a favorite, but there were too many to choose from. The shortlist consisted of “The City”, “Rumor Of War”, “Pass Me By”, “Understand” and “Days Of My Youth”. Like I said, I simply couldn’t choose. In the end I just decided to go with the track that got hooked on their sound and style in the first place: “Brand New”.

64. “Peso” – A$AP Rocky

I’m going to be honest and say I didn’t really get what all the fuss was about. Sure the A$AP Rocky Mixtape is cool, but lyrically it’s just not up to par. The thing that makes this project stand out is the bass heavy soundscape. The rest isn’t that great. The superficiality of it all is what bothers me the most. But with beats like these who needs content, right? I read a review recently that said the following about A$AP Rocky:

“Rocky’s true talent is for curating exceptional beats and knowing when to get out of their way. By enlisting some of the Internet’s most forward-thinking young producers, he’s crafted the year’s most stylish mix-tape, a melting pot of nearly every major underground rap trend of the last 16 months, all pitched to the intoxicating slow crawl of Houston screw music. Live Love A$AP’s only real fault is that it’s so willfully superficial. It plays like Odd Future without the rebellion, Lil B without the opinions, Curren$y without the wit, or G-Side without the struggle. “I be that pretty motherfucker,” Rocky brags over and over. For now, he’s content not being anything more than that.” (avclub.com)

And that, my friends, is exactly the point I wanted to make. Even I can’t deny that production wise “Live Love A$AP” is a thing of beauty.

63. “XXX” – Danny Brown

It took a while for me to fully appreciate Danny Brown’s XXX. The first dozen listens or so mostly consisted of me asking myself why everyone was so taken in by this project. I was already familiar with Danny Brown before this project, so it wasn’t as if I had to get used to his high-pitched voice or anything.

It wasn’t until I put this record on in the gym that I started to love, and I do mean love, this record. It’s raw and creative, like you wouldn’t believe. I’m aware that this might not be for everyone, but if you’re open to it this might very easily make a Danny Brown fan out of you too.

62. “It’s Alright” (ft. Marsha Ambrosius) (Produced by Kanye West) – Saigon

A long time in the making, but 2011 going to be the year it was gonna happen; Saigon would release his long, long, long overdue “The Greatest Story Never Told”. And was it the masterpiece that was promised to us? Hardly! Now I’m not saying It was bad or anything, because it definitely wasn’t. It’s just that the build-up to this record was so huge, that disappointment would almost certainly be inevitable, which is pretty much the case here. “It’s Alright” is one of those tracks that immediately catches your ear. Kanye West proves once more that he can flip any sample into a true hip-hop classic. Here, he takes an original Luther Vandross sample and turns in into a fantastic speedup hook. Marsha Ambrosius comes in and adds another wonderful element to the song.

61. “Freaks And Geeks – Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino ripped this song to shreds. I must have watched the official video for this song over thirty times. The lyricism on display here is breath-taking. It’s focused, articulate and funny. Elements that were lacking somewhat on Childish Gambino’s debut “Camp”. But don’t believe the smear campaign initiated by Pitchfork, because that 1.6 rating was totally not deserved.  “Camp” has plenty to offer. Although I will agree that both the EP and Culdesac are way better examples of Danny Glover’s talent.

Let me simply end by stating this: “Freaks And Geeks” is fucking awesome!

80. “Here We Go Again” – Roots Manuva

“4everevolution” marked the return of Rodney Smith. After a string of disappointment he finally found his grow, and that groove has a name: Toddla T. Not everyone felt the same about this release. It wasn’t too long ago that I had an hour long discussion about Roots Manuva, this album, and the (lack of) progression of this artist. A heated discussion with two very different opinions, but those are always the most fun.

People tend to forget that Roots Manuva is not your traditional hip-hop artist. And once you get passed that you might be able to enjoy his music a lot better. “4everevolution” has a couple of duds, but overall it’s really creative and undeniably catchy. The outstanding “Here We Go Again”, with its escalating sense of foreboding doom, was a true example of Rodney at his best.

79. “Mr. Nobody” – Reks

I love the nineties vibe of this song, and that R&B hook is killer. But the thing that really made this song jump out was the lyrical content. It’s Reks’ depiction of his bleak family situation, while growing up. No sugar-coating, just a really talented rapper telling his story as honestly as he can. And you gotta admire that! Reks delivered a stellar album with his “Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme”. It’s a real shame that we live in a world where emcees like this overlooked or passed, while ‘rappers’ (and I use that term loosely here) like Lil’ Wayne make millions.

The thing I admire most about this latest album is the way Reks tells his life story; almost as if you were listening to his memoirs. Solid stuff!

78. “You Make The Music” – Othello & Theory Hazit

This EP came out of nowhere and filled me with a longing for more. Othello has always been a favorite of mine and Theory Hazit impressed me quite a bit with his productions over the last couple of years. AM: Neja is one partnership I’d love to hear more of in the future. The lyricism is fast and precise, while the beats (courtesy of Mayer Hawthorne, 14KT, and Hir-O) are smooth, soulful and original.

It was pretty hard trying to pick a favorite out of the six songs that were featured. “You Make The Music” beat out “Thankful” only by a couple of inches. The main reason is the beat. It’s infectious, it’s bouncy, it’s fun; I remember raping the repeat button the very first time I put it on. Let’s hope this get’s a full-length sequel.

77. “Conversations” – Superstar Quamallah and Deqawn

Here’s something I’ve learned about myself while listening to this song: I can name fourteen different songs that have used the “Tomorrow” sample by the Brothers Johnson. Some successful, some not! As you might have gathered from the numerous times I’ve posted this thing on FaceBook, this song is one of the better “Tomorrow” sample. The best group to have flipped this sample is still the Blue Scholars (“Sagaba”).

The soulful production is only one half of the equation thou. The production might have caught my attention, but it’s the hella funny lyrics that kept me listening (over and over again). Give it a listen, I guarantee you’ll laugh more than once.

76. “Can’t Forget HipHop” (ft. Moby Dee) – ShinSight Trio

ShinSight Trio is made up of Shin-Ski, Insight and DJ Ryow. Together they bring back that ol’ skool, heavy jazz based hip-hop. Their latest album Moonlight Sunrise kind of took me by surprise. I wasn’t expecting much, as their previous wasn’t all that special in my mind. But this little gem is a whole other story.

“Can’t Forget Hiphop” is the last cut on the record, and what a fitting way to close out the album. Its soulful production & heartfelt lyrics immediately connected with me. Simply a great ode to the art form!

75. “Killer Dope” – DJ Quik

DJ Quik remains an ol’ skool hero of mine. And even after more than twenty years of service to this thing we call hip-hop, he’s still as underrated as can be. This year he released the hugely enjoyable “Book of David”. It took some time for me to really get into this album. A lot of the songs were very poppy, but if you give it a chance it will definitely grow on you (as was the case with me).

The blaring trumpets on “Killer Dope” form the perfect backdrop for DJ Quik’s witty rants. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any of the lyrics online, or else I would have posted a verse.

74. “Skipping Rocks” – Oddisee

I have nothing but the deepest admiration for the skill of this man. His productions are more than just simple kicks and snares. They’re like a living organism; filled with intricate subtleties and layered grooves. Oddisee’s instrumental album “Rock Creek Park” is a must buy for any music lover. Much like his previous work this is a collection of moments, with each song playing to a particular mood.

“Oddisee delivers what might be his best effort to date. With stellar arrangement, musical innovation and impressive production skills, he reminds us all that modern jazz is still alive, and it can be great. This is the kind of album I want to break out a bottle of Riesling and chill to; the kind of album your kids will be sampling in 10 to 17 years. So impressive in fact, I will give it that extra .5 it honestly deserves. A personal thanks and shoutout to Oddisee for giving me something to start Autumn off right and keep on repeat for a while. 73. “Raw” (ft. Godly MC & Kev Brown) – DTMD

I’m not even gonna front; I was pretty disappointed when I finally heard DTMD’s album “Makin Dollas”. I really dug their EP, but something just wasn’t there on this record. One or two standout tracks, a handful of okay beats, some decent rappin’, and that about sums it up.

The Kev Brown beat did it for me on this one. It’s a thing of pure beauty. Now I will say that I’m not entirely objective when it comes to Kev Brown. I believe the man is a genius. So some of you might not agree on “Raw” making my top 100, but hey who cares. It’s my list!

72. “All My Love” (ft. Yummy Bingham) – TiRon & Ayomari

Now this is something special. TiRon & Ayomari released an album called “A Sucker For Pumps”, and that shit is amazing. It well produces, well written, and has that X-factor. Not to mention that the record has infinite repeat value. I’m been playing it for almost 5 months straight.

Another thing that made this album so special was that it’s not just for men. As a matter of fact this record caters specifically to women. The lyrics are about women, the beats are very smooth and soulful (none of those hard-core ‘let me jump your bones’ type productions); making them an extremely well fit for the female demographic. For me this project represents the perfect balance between honest rap and funky danceable beats.

“The project reads as an emotional rollercoaster that will evoke personal sentiments of heartbreak, passion, and love. There’s a touch of both humor and tragedy in the sucker motif, but the delivery makes listeners empathetic for the sucker who risks, loves, indulges, and fails, but incessantly remains an addict of the ‘pump’.” (joonbug.com)

71. “Bax” – Mosca

Absolutely love this joint right here. The perfect soundtrack to any night spent clubbin’. The UK has always been a good breeding ground for dance music, but this year was especially crazy. I haven’t listened to this much 2step, dub, UK garage, jungle and other related genres since the days of the Artful Dodger (circa 1999). Mosca has a very bright future ahead of him if he keeps this up.

The production here is pretty simple, but the ol’ skool bassline is just too catchy to resist. Like I said songs like “Bax” remind me of days (and mostly nights) gone by. And any song that can do that is fine in my book.

Onlangs heeft Aaron Jerome, beter bekend als SBTRKT, een remix proberen te smeden uit het nummer U Don’t Survive. Zoals je hieronder kunt horen is deze missie meer dan volbracht.

De eerste sneak peak, de single Born To Lose, was eergisteren te horen op BBC Radio 1. De track is hieronder te streamen.  

Sleigh Bells – “Born To Lose”

Blu zette het één emcee/één producer concept voort en bracht daarna nog een drietal albums uit met verschillende noemenswaardige producers. De één wat succesvoller als de ander. Dit jaar bracht hij zijn solodebuut NO YORK uit, dat een lauw ontvangst kreeg. Persoonlijk vond ik het een hele dope plaat.

Exile ging meer de expertimentele kant op en bracht Radio uit; een album gevuld met audiotechnische probeersels. Onlangs bracht de producer het project 4TRKMIND uit. Net als bij Radio bleef ook hier het succes uit.

En nog net voor het eind van 2011 komen de heren met misschien wel de verrassing van het jaar (inhoudelijk kan ik er helaas nog niets over zeggen, maar mijn verwachtingen zijn hoog).

Het eerste album van Elle Varner genaamd Perfectly Imperfect wordt in februari 2012 uitgebracht. Momenteel is er een album sampler vrijgegeven met vier tracks geproduceerd door het jonge getalenteerde duo Pop & Oak. “So Fly”, “Soundproof Room” en “Refill” hebben allen een old skool R&B vibe met dikke basslines en drums. Elle’s stem en lyrics maken het vervolgens zo af, dat je de stop knop niet meer nodig hebt. Luister hieronder, download hier en dan krijg je ”Only Wanna Give It To You” met J. Cole er ook nog eens bij!

Elle woont momenteel in New York waar ze de afgelopen jaren aan het Clive Davis Instituut aan de New York University heeft gestudeerd. Op een dag werd Elle al pingelend op haar gitaar gespot door een bekende van het door Jeff Robinson (ex-manager van Alicia Keys) geleide MBK Entertainment.. Ze werd binnen no time uitgenodigd op kantoor om te laten horen wat ze in huis had en sindsdien hebben ze het jonge talent nooit meer laten gaan.

Het afgelopen jaar was een stijgende lijn te constateren in haar naamsbekendheid, dit mede door een aaneenschakeling van intieme optredens. Maar uiteraard heeft het verspreiden van twee schitterende ep’tje haar ook de nodige fans opgeleverd. De onlangs verschenen Lost & Found ep is te koop via bandcamp en iTunes. Begin 2012 zal miss Havas haar albumdebuut presenteren; haar stijl en sound hebben in zeker opzicht veel gemeen met dat van Corinne Bailey Rae en India Arie. Alleen voelt Lianne La Havas minder prekerig aan en is zij in tegenstelling tot die andere twee een stuk sexier.

These ‘end year lists’ come in many different forms, and cover almost any cultural or creative output imaginable, from best movies to best literary works. For one month the entire web is hell-bent on educating the masses on what they should be reading, watching or listening to. And it usually results in quite an interesting, if not, very entertaining read.

In the past four years I’ve contributed to this tradition by making a yearly Top 100 list of my favorite songs. Each year I would write a series of ten blogs, in which I would discuss ten songs per blog (counting down from a hundred).

This year’s “Soundtrack of 2011” series represents a collection of songs that piqued my interest over the past eleven and a half months. The reason for their inclusion in this list can be attributed to a number of things namely, lyrical content, musicality and sentimental value.

The list will cover a wide range of musical genres, but at the end of the day its main focus is on black music. Hip hop, soul, jazz and R&B are all very well represented in this list.

90. “Medicine Men” (ft. A.R.M.) – IllVibe Collective

My one true love has always been hiphop, but jazz was never that far behind. The combination between the two is like a match made in heaven. When I was a kid I used to spend hours on end listening to A Tribe Called Quest, and their perfect fusion of smooth jazz and nineties boom bap. This song incorporates the same tactic, only not so much for jazz. It’s afro beat that gets thrown in the mix here. The result is a really catchy tune, with the funkiest drums I’ve heard all hear.

I was also eagerly awaiting that A.R.M. album, but I guess that thing is stuck in limbo at this point. I haven’t heard anything about it for months.

89. “Pulsemuzik” (ft. Wildelux) – AGQ

I actually spend weeks trying to find out which song this was. I first heard it while attending a Pete Philly concert. The DJ at that event played it before the show started. I immediately got out my phone, and started Soundhounding the fuck out that thing. No results! For some reason I never seem to be able to find anything with Soundhound. Sure, my taste is a bit more underground. But not that obscure, right? I kid you not; I’ve been using Soundhound for over two years and haven’t gotten a single hit yet. But I’m getting off track.

Eventually I found the song through my trusted friend, the internet. Download the entire album and was pleasantly surprised. A solid release from AGQ; whom I had never heard of up to that point.

88. “Introspective Of A Young Black Male” – Add-2

For some reason this song kept reminding me of a young Jay-Z. Not that this guy sounds like him, but it’s more the attitude and the production of the song. Also the fact that they sampled Jay-Z’ Heart in the City and Nas’ The World Is Yours in one song didn’t hurt.

This young rapper from Chicago released a free mixtape this year called “One Missed Call”. It is very much in the same vain as this song, so if you like “Introspective of a Young Black Male” then you should definitely get “One Missed Call”.

87. “Win Or Lose” – Malcolm & Martin

Having read thewellversed.com review which described their mixtape “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” as follows ”This is one of the most honest hip-hop records you’ll hear along, coupled with production filled with heart and soul”, I simply had to check it out. And I have to give the writer of that review credit, because Malcolm & Martin delivered exactly like he or she described. It’s a very honest and introspective record that doesn’t shy away from telling the truth. No matter how painful.

The project does suffer from that all too familiar hip-hop ailment, namely fillers. There are a number of songs on there that simply don’t belong.

They interrupt the flow of the album, and feel somewhat lacking in focus. I have a bunch of favourites, but “Win or Lose” wins hands down. The Rocky Balboa sample at the end is just pure genius.

86. “Roof Of Your Car” (Twitter Album Version) – The Streets

Let me start off by saying how disappointed I am in Mike Skinner. I used to be the biggest fan of The Streets, especially in the Original Pirate Material days. But as time went on I found myself not liking the direction his sound was heading. “The Hardest Way To Make A Living” and “Everything Is Borrowed” were mediocre at the best; nowhere near the brilliance of the first two records.

The thing that bothered me the most about his latter work was the decision to incorporate more reggae/dancehall themes in the production. Their influence was always evident in his work, but as time went the balance got mangled, in my opinion of course.

His latest (and according to reports also his last) album Computers and Blues was a return to form. There are several songs on there that remind the listener of his best work. The album version of “Roof Of My Car” was very slick, and polished. I’m not saying that that’s a bad thing, I just preferred the Twitter Version which felt more like an unfinished gem. It just sounded rawer, and the first verse was way better than the final version.

85. “Don’t Shoot Me Down” (ft. Goapele & Ab Liva) – Mateo

Yes, I do still listen to R&B. Sometimes! Actually I’ve been listening to R&B a lot more this year than in previous years. The reasons are twofold: 1. The Weeknd and 2. Frank Ocean. With The Weeknd it’s his combination of electronic influences and silky smooth sex. His album House Of Balloons is the perfect soundtrack to any horizontal bedroom activity. And Frank Ocean restored my faith in the genre by his beautiful song writing. I especially love how he doesn’t present himself as this sappy lover boy.

Mateo is more of a traditional R&B artist. But his mixtape wasn’t half bad. The reason I love this song so much was mainly because of Goapele. She simply rocked her part, and added some beautiful harmonies to the hook.

84. “Rien Ne M’Arrétera” – The Hop

There’s so much about this track that I love. First off, there is the rapid flow with which MC Espiiem just hypnotizes his listeners. It’s really something to marvel at. Then there’s the beautiful French language. Hip hop is universal, but I doubt there’s another language that transforms spitting rhymes into something this pure. Like the Merovingian said in that Matrix movie:

“I love French wine, like I love the French language. I have sampled every language, French is my favorite. Fantastic language. Especially to curse with. Nom de dieu de putain de bordel de merde de saloperie de connard d’enculer ta mère. It’s like wiping your arse with silk. I love it.”

Like wiping your arse with silk indeed! But the horns on this track are what really did it for me. Simply beautiful! Very reminiscent of the nineties and that’s always a good thing.

83. “Kinetic Energy” – Has-Lo

Has-Lo is a lyrical genius! I’ve been following his career from the very start and any beat this guy blesses with a verse is okay in my book.

It’s been a prolific year for Has-Lo. First he released the somewhat sober “In Case I Don’t Make It”, which was an excellent album that put his flow and lyrical content above the production. Not that the beats are bad, because that’s definitely not the case. They were just more in the background. Everything was very minimal here.

That was not the case with his other 2011 album “Conversation B”. Here the productions took the foreground. And the results were equally impressing. “Kinetic Energy” is one of my favorite joints in the first project. His voice is hypnotic, just coasts over the beat. Beautiful!

82. “Run Away” – Akua Naru

Who said Germans were all bad? Our lovely eastern-neighbour Akua Naru delivered a stellar album this year. Definitely one of the more soulful projects I’ve heard in these past eleven months. “Run Away” was a song that stuck with me because of the emotional overtones. As a matter of fact I had a really hard time picking a favorite from this album (I always try to limit myself to just one or maybe sometimes two songs per album).

Too bad there aren’t more female emcees in the game right now. And no I don’t rate Nicki Minaj as an emcee! For me, she’d fall into the category ‘freak of nature’.

81. “She Hates The Bass” – Stalley

Songs about car culture; you either love ‘em or you hate ‘em. As you can see I fall in the first category. And Stalley rides the beat on this thing like it was a brand new set of wheels. The laidback lyricism, the subdued bass and the catchy hook all contribute in making this one hell of a song.

Stalley made me a fan this year. I loved his “Lincoln Way Nights” projects. So much so, that I’m expecting big things for this dude. He’s got this ridiculous flow that is backed by intellect. Something you can’t say about every rapper nowadays.

Nu-soul icoon (ja, ik zei het) Musiq Soulchild staat met een voltallige band in een bijna-uitverkochte Sand aanstaande zaterdag 17 december, en dat konden we hier bij Quality Time natuurlijk niet ongemerkt voorbij laten gaan. Na 7 albums verdient hij wel iets speciaals, vandaar dat we het hier aankondigen: vanaf nu is het Musiq Soulchild week, hier bij Quality Time. 100. “High” – Koncept & Tranzformer

Brooklyn emcee Koncept and Cali beatmaker Tranzformer took me by surprise with their collaboration EP “More Than Meets The Eye”. It got released through djbooth.net at the beginning of the year, and somehow found its way into my Ipod. Lyrically Koncept sounds really nice. He’s got this mellow ‘down to earth’ swagger, which I admire. Also the beats on this little EP are crisp. Very soulful stuff!

The only beef I have with this EP is that it was way too short. I’m hoping these two creative minds come together for a full-length LP soon. “High” was my favorite track on here, and the video isn’t half bad either. I also recently saw that Koncept is getting ready to put out a full-length solo LP in 2012. Here is a first taste from that project, which is called “Awaken”. Can’t even front, shit sounds tight. Koncept is definitely going on my ‘one to watch’ list for next year.

99. “ST. Salute” (ft. Ea$y Money & H. Blanco) (Produced by Statik Selektah) – Termanology

I’m not the biggest fan of Termanology, but sometimes the dude suprises me. That was not the case with “Cameo King II” unfortunately. That collection of songs just sounded unfinished and forced. The features were the thing that caught my eye, but overall the entire thing was one big letdown. “ST. Salute” was the only track that actually made my head tell my body to hit the repeat button.

The beat is simple, but the scratches add a lot of flavor. The thing that really stood out for me was the Hispanic trio of emcees that blessed this thing with a really nice flow. They seem to simply glide over the beat, especially H Blanco.  The production has a definite New York quality, which is always a good thing in my book.

98. “BIG Lights, DEEP Shades” – Nemo Achida

I remember hearing about this dude in 2010, when he released his Vibrations EP. Right from the very first cut I was hooked. He’s got this Mos Def type of flow. You can hear it very well in “BIG Lights, DEEP Shades”. His production choices also stood out. The Goodbye Brooklyn EP, the Digital Dan LP, and the Nemotional LP all have a very mellow core.

But there’s also a willingness to experiment with foreign influences (non-traditional hiphop sounds). When I heard the intro on the Vibrations EP, my very first thought was how the production had a certain Madlib quality. That comparison doesn’t hold up with his recent release Nemotional, which sounds a little more commercial. But I’m not hating, it’s works very well. I’m hoping to hear more from this dude in the future.

97. “When I Come Around” – Dom Kennedy

Dom Kennedy’s album “From The Westside With Love 2” was a sweet throwback to old skool hip hop. I really enjoyed that project during the summer. Not everything on there was good, but a big chunk was simply irresistible. The reason I loved this track in particular was because of the carefree attitude it sends out.

“When I Come Around” is fun and catchy. It presents Dom Kennedy in top form, and it always reminded me of “It Was A Good Day” by Ice Cube. I still think Dom does the best unintentional Ice Cube impersonation I’ve ever heard. His voice is almost identical to that of a young Ice Cube.

There’s this one line where Dom claims to be “everybody’s type, and he gots what everybody like”. With a song like this you’d almost be inclined to believe him.

96. “Ashes On My Block” (ft. Triple OG) – Maffew Ragazino

I first heard of Maffew Ragazino when he blessed Meyhem Lauren’s track “Even More Butter” with a very tight verse. I found his free LP “Rhyme Pays” online a couple of months back, and gave It a couple of listens. Unfortunately for Maffew the September month was filled with a whole lot of good releases, which forced me to choose what I albums I was going to listen to. The amount of material that gets released nowadays is simply unbelievable. I try to keep up, but that has proven to be an impossible task. This was the only song that got to stay in my heavy rotation playlist.

95. “Insomniac Dreaming” (Produced by Black Milk) – A.Dd+

Love this beat! Black Milk has always been kind of hit and miss for me. I loved “Popular Demand”, but his output after that hasn’t always been good. “Tronic” for example, was really cool when I first heard it. But I found it lacking in repeat value and longevity. The same goes for “Album of the Year”.

I’ve put together a little theory, which stipulates that Black Milk is at his best when he’s crafting for other folks. Not himself! “Insomniac Dreaming” is the perfect example of how good Black Milk can be when he’s behind the boards, instead of in front of the mic.

94. “NuBeginning4” (ft. Machine) – Quelle Chris

This is a late entry. I only recently started listening to Quelle Chris’ album Shotgun & Sleek Rifle. Someone I know from several forums sent it to me, and I have to say: I’m thankful. It’s a great release filled with “some of 2011’s best production” (potholesinmyblog.com). The content is really diverse, from typical raps about weed and girls to intricately told crime stories.

“NuBeginnings4” caught my attention because of the down to earth vibe and honesty. It didn’t hurt that the beat was dope, either.

“Shotgun & Sleek Rifle is another gem to fall out of the deracinated centers of Detroit rock city. It and Quelle are adding to a city’s rap legacy that is becoming mighty strong post Slum Village and Jay Dee.” (potholesinmyblog.com)

93. “Speed Kills” (ft. Asia J) – SmooVth

This is my jam! Strangely enough “Speed Kills” is the perfect song for when you’re driving at night; just you, the road, and some smooth beats. Keep in mind that “Speed Kills”, so no daredevil antics. I’ve known about SmooVth for a couple of years now, mostly through his work with Tha Connection. So I had certain expectations going in, and luckily his album Red Dot Plot delivers in spades. Highly recommended! Especially if you’re an ol’ skool hip hop head.

92. “Magic”(ft. Curren$y & Stalley) – Nesby Phips

“Magic” is one of my favorite tracks from this past summer. It has the type of beat that simply screams ‘jetlife’. No wonder Curren$y is on here, and why not; he sounds so at ease on tracks like this. All three emcees are on some laidback, live your life type shit. I read a YouTube comment that said: “negative attitudes don’t exist at this altitude”. How right you are my friend.

91. “Lovahorts” – Knxwledge

Smooth, and oozing tons of sex, this cut is exquisite. Knxwledge is probably the most prolific producer of 2011. Not a month went by without some sort of release by this dude. Not all were as good, but that is to be expected when you put out as much as he did.

“Lovahorts” was the first cut on his Hexual Sealings LP, which was a really sexy R&B record where Knxwledge flipped a whole bunch of popular R&B cuts into something totally unique. “Lovahorts” is “Be Friends” by Music Soulchild taken to another level. This is more than merely a remix. It’s an entirely new song with a slightly off kilter take on musicality. It’s a track that bleeds heartfelt passion through every snare and kick.

Als huisband van het Late Night programma van Jimmy Fallon hebben The Roots menig ander artiest ondersteund op dat podium. Afgelopen week was het eindelijk weer eens de beurt aan hen om center stage te nemen. Geholpen door soulzanger Bilal, pianist D.D. Jackson en het Metropolis Ensemble werden de nummers “Tip The Scale” en “Otherside”, afkomstig van het 13de studio album Undun, opgevoerd.

Niet alleen is er een nieuwe poster voor Christopher Nolan’s vervolg op The Dark Knight; deze week wordt ook nog eens een prologue van 8 minuten uit het nieuwste deel in de Batman-reeks getoond als voorprogramma bij de blockbuster Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. De reclamecampagne voor ‘de film van 2012′ is dus officieel van start gegaan. De verwachtingen zijn hoog, maar met Christopher Nolan in de regiestoel is er goede hoop dat ze worden waargemaakt. En misschien zelfs overtroffen.

“In the interest of preserving the mystery of the movie, Warner Bros. politely asked journalists in attendance to refrain from giving blow-by-blow reactions, a request MTV News is happy to heed. What we can say is that the action in the opening sequence occurs mostly on a plane and that it features several high-flying, mind-blowing special effects of the practical, not the CG, variety. The sequence seems to pick up right where “The Dark Knight” leaves off — Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent’s funeral — and, most important, features one of the more memorable character introductions we’ve seen of late as viewers got the first look at Tom Hardy in action as Bane, complete with creepy leather face mask.

There are government agents, military personnel and civilians involved in the setup, but it’s all eyes on Bane. And if what we see him say and do in the first few minutes is representative of his villainous arc in the full-length feature, it’s clear that Nolan is venturing into more ominous territory in “Rises.” Where Heath Ledger’s unforgettable Joker was dark, twisted and almost whimsically crazy, Hardy’s Bane is a horrific, maniacal force. That’s apparent whenever the camera locks onto his eyes or when he speaks for the first time, revealing a garbled, aggressive German accent. Bane will no doubt prove a formidable force to be reckoned with, and we can’t help but anticipate his first meeting with Batman.”

Op deze negen track tellende mini-plaat laat hij vooral zijn soulvolle kant de vrije loop. “LateNYC” wordt via bandcamp aangeboden voor 5 dollar, maar QT mag voor een beperkte periode het album als gratis download aanbieden. Deze zanger / producer / schrijver bracht in 2010 en 2011 twee mixtapes uit, House of Balloons en Thursday, die beiden enorm goede reviews scoorden. Twee tracks uit zijn begin periode (2009) hebben we voor je gevonden en kan je nu checken: “Cure” en “Superhero”.

In afwachting van José James’ nieuwste plaat “No Beginning, No End” is hier een gratis upload van de getalenteerde zanger. Tijdens zijn tour door Noord-Amerika heeft hij enkele live-opvoeringen laten opnemen en gebundeld in deze drie nummer tellende upload.

Aaliyah’s ster is rijzende, als het vliegtuig neerstort. Op 22-jarige leeftijd is Aaliyah’s leven ten einde, maar haar invloed op de muziekwereld wordt vanaf dat moment alleen maar groter.

In de zomer van 2001 wordt de radio overspoeld door Destiny’s Child, Jennifer Lopez en Janet Jackson. “We Need A Resolution”, de eerste single van Aaliyah’s derde album, blijft vrijwel onopgemerkt tussen deze vrolijke R&B hits. Onterecht, want de Timbaland-productie is een klein meesterwerk: verleidelijke melodieën, hypnotiserende ritmes en Aaliyah’s stem die als een slang door de beats kruipt. De hitlijsten lijken nog niet klaar voor dit futuristische geluid.

Vijf jaar later scoort Justin Timberlake een hit met “My Love”, dat zo uit de discografie van Aaliyah zou kunnen komen. Zelfs de choreografie uit de videoclip doet sterk denken aan Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody?”. Ook Nelly Furtado scoort hits met “Maneater” en “Promiscuous”, allemaal geproduceerd door Timbaland. Hij is niet meer weg te denken uit de hitlijsten en iedereen wil een stukje van zijn geluid. Het geluid dat Aaliyah helpt te creëren als ze in 1996 voor haar album One In A Million samenwerkt met een onbekend duo: Timbaland en Missy Elliott. Niemand kan dan voorspellen hoeveel invloed zij op de popmuziek zullen hebben, maar Aaliyah lijkt een voorgevoel te hebben.

Aaliyah was haar tijd ver vooruit. Toen ze vijftien jaar was, stond zij al op #1 in Amerikaanse R&B chart met de debuutsingle “Back & Forth”. In de clip is een piepjong meisje te zien met grote zonnebril en baggy kleding. Haar leeftijd wordt geheim gehouden en het debuutalbum krijgt de titel Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number. De muzikale belofte is vooral te horen op de Isley Brothers cover “At Your Best (You Are Love)”. Aaliyah klinkt als een engeltje met haar hoge noten, maar zingt met de overgave van een volwassen vrouw.

De ‘new jack swing sound’ van haar debuut maakt op het tweede album One In A Million plaats voor een meer doordacht geluid. Aaliyah’s zachte stem klinkt over harde beats en het werkt uitstekend. Deze tegenstelling komt ook naar voren in haar imago, dat ze zelf omschrijft als ‘street but sweet’. In haar clips is Aaliyah cool en afstandelijk, maar in interviews zien we een verlegen meisje met een brede glimlach. Ook vrienden en collega’s beschrijven haar steevast als een ware engel en geven haar de bijnaam Baby Girl.

Door Aaliyah’s succes ontstaat er een hele stroom aan zwarte tienerzangeressen. In 1998 scoren Brandy en Monica een wereldhit met “The Boy Is Mine”. Zij zingen de sterren van de hemel, maar Aaliyah is haar leeftijdsgenoten een stap voor. Met “Are You That Somebody?” presenteert zij zich in datzelfde jaar als een complete artiest. Niet alleen heeft ze een eigen geluid, maar in de clip zien we een professionele danseres. Het meisje dat ooit verkondigde nooit een jurk te zullen dragen, is een jonge vrouw geworden. Aaliyah heeft een artistieke visie en dit plaatst haar eerder op het niveau van grote voorbeelden Michael en Janet Jackson, dan dat van haar generatiegenoten.

Zingen, dansen en optreden zijn niet genoeg voor Aaliyah en in 2000 komt haar eerste film uit: Romeo Must Die. De acteerprestaties zijn prima, maar met de soundtrack gooit ze écht hoge ogen. “Try Again” klinkt anders dan alle andere popmuziek en slaat in als een bom. Het nummer en de bijbehorende clip zijn donkerder dan we van haar gewend zijn. Het verlegen meisje is nu echt volwassen en klaar om de wereld te veroveren. “Try Again” bereikt de eerste plaats van de Billboard Hot 100 en schrijft geschiedenis: het is de eerste keer dat een single de toppositie bereikt enkel en alleen gebaseerd op airplay. Het succes maakt Aaliyah nog gedrevener.

Zoals een dichter zijn donkere kant uit in poëzie, zo komt Aaliyah’s donkere kant tot uiting in haar muziek en films. Voor haar nieuwe filmproject komt ze dan ook met een gewaagde keuze: de rol van vampier Akasha in Queen of the Damned. Tijdens de opnames maakt ze ook haar derde album en de duistere invloed van haar alter ego is op bijna alle nummers aanwezig.

Naast Timbaland werkt Aaliyah vooral samen met producers die het beste in haar naar boven brengen. Op Aaliyah wordt er geëxperimenteerd met genres als rock en drum ‘n bass. Het album is speels en creatief, met een serieuze ondertoon. Het toonaangevende muziektijdschrift Rolling Stone vergelijkt Aaliyah dan ook met Janet Jackson’s Control en Jagged Little Pill van Alanis Morisette.

Het album laat zien dat Aaliyah optimaal gebruik maakt van haar talenten door met de juiste mensen te werken. De producers rekken haar unieke stem uit als een soort elastiek en weven dit door de beats heen. De tekstschrijvers zetten Aaliyah’s mysterieuze gevoelens om in de juiste woorden, zodat zij één wordt met haar muziek. Choreografe Fatima Robinson bedenkt tot slot bijpassende dansjes die eruitzien alsof het Aaliyah’s natuurlijke bewegingen zijn. Aaliyah is een groot succes, maar helaas ook het laatste album dat de zangeres maakt.

De tweede single beklimt de Amerikaanse hitlijsten al voor de release. Het gaat om “Rock The Boat”, een zwoel en sensueel nummer. Veel R&B artiesten laten weinig tot de verbeelding over, maar Aaliyah brengt haar boodschap op een stijlvolle manier die eerder doet denken aan zangeres Sade dan aan haar directe collega’s. Voor de videoclip reist Aaliyah af naar de Bahama’s en daar slaat het noodlot toe. Vlak na de laatste opnames stapt de zangeres in een klein vliegtuigje, omdat zij snel naar huis wil. Kort na opstijgen stort het vliegtuig neer en alle inzittenden komen om het leven.

De dood van Aaliyah schokt de gehele muziekwereld. Oude en nieuwe fans prijzen haar muziek en collega’s en vrienden vertellen over haar bijzondere persoonlijkheid. Er ontstaat een nieuwe stroming R&B zangeressen, die in de voetsporen van Aaliyah hopen te treden. Ashanti scoort een hit met “Foolish” en is ook ‘street but sweet’. Ze speelt het schattige meisje, dat zich omringt door stoere rappers als Ja Rule. Ciara breekt in 2004 door met “Goodies”, waarop ze over harde beats zingt met haar zoete stem. Net als Aaliyah zorgt ze in haar clips voor een strakke choreografie. Beide zangeressen zijn slechts kort succesvol.

Het succes van Aaliyah groeide juist langzaam en natuurlijk. Haar muziek was een verlenging van haar persoon. Ze wist precies waar zij heen wilde en ontwikkelde zich razendsnel. Op 22-jarige leeftijd was Aaliyah haar tijd al ver vooruit en wellicht niet zonder reden. Ze had op geen waardigere manier afscheid kunnen nemen dan met Aaliyah, één van de beste R&B albums van dit millennium. Een album waarop haar persoonlijkheid blijft stralen.

Als je uit volle borst meezingt vergeet je dat het misschien wel een schreeuw om hulp is. Dit krijgt een nare bijsmaak door haar vroegtijdige overlijden op 23 juli 2011, welke onmogelijk los te koppelen lijkt van haar alcohol- en drugsverslaving.

Als Winehouse in 2003 debuteert met Frank is het moeilijk te geloven dat zij een tiener is tijdens de opnames. Niet alleen door Amy’s merkwaardige uiterlijk, maar vooral door haar enorme talent. Ze smelt moeiteloos allerlei muziekstijlen als jazz, soul en hip hop samen tot een fris, eigen geluid. De zelfgeschreven teksten zitten vol geestige woordspelingen (‘like the news, every day you get pressed’) en verraden dat Amy niet zomaar een adolescent uit Londen is.

Hoewel zij veel aandacht besteedt aan de andere sekse, maken nummers als “Stronger Than Me” duidelijk dat Amy verre van bevredigd is op dit gebied. Ze verwoordt haar verslaving aan het mannelijke geslacht met spitse teksten die balanceren tussen eerlijk en brutaal (‘feel like a lady and you’re my ladyboy’). En dan is er natuurlijk die stem, een stem die overloopt van soul en persoonlijkheid.

Op haar tweede album Back To Black is de stem van Winehouse volwassener en zo mogelijk nog soulvoller. Haar verslavingsgevoelige persoonlijkheid heeft zijn sporen nagelaten, getuige het magere meisje dat apathisch in de camera kijkt op de coverfoto. Het album heeft dan ook een donkerder tintje dan Frank.

De humoristische teksten zijn er nog altijd. Zo gaat “Me & Mr. Jones” over het dumpen van een vriendje, omdat hij geen kaartje regelde voor het concert van rapper Nas (Nasir Jones). Maar de meeste nummers lijken geaard in verdriet.

Back To Black is opgedragen aan ‘anyone who falls in love every day,’ zo lezen we in de bedankjes van het cd-boekje. Achter de markante persoon Amy Winehouse schuilde iemand die hunkerde naar liefde, maar alleen stierf.

Amy Winehouse was muziek. En als we haar enorme pruiken, alcohol- en drugsgebruik, relaties met foute mannen en gênante optredens zijn vergeten, zal deze er nog altijd zijn. De muziek van een onbegrepen jonge vrouw die verslaafd was, vooral aan liefde.
